Trimble County 62 Simon Kenton 54 (8th Region Final)

Nice kudos on here from several regarding the Trimble support. That's awesome.

Have to say though, I was very disappointed in the support the SK kids received from the school and community. With the exception of the band, cheerleaders and diehard fans, the support at the district and regional games was dismal.

Yeah, I get that the tourney was almost a 90 minute drive but SK won their first regional title in that very gym and the stands were packed with students, teachers and administrators throughout the school system. This team deserved better. I'm hoping that SK doesn't still have a pep club.

Common problem at most schools anymore I think, outside of a few. Used to be student body looked forward to attending games and cheering both home and away, not any more though. Rather be playing X-Box or sharing texts or whatever else it is that young people do nowadays but attend games of their peers.

Let me ask a question......since it is obviously beyond the realm of possibility that kids end up at certain places for a reason.....How many times do you think open enrollment has ever been discussed involving the bottom 5 teams in any given region??? You choose a region......

Are the 8th graders on Simon's roster going to Simon next year? Someone was talking about that at the regional tourney. So my question is do 8th graders get to choose what high school they can attend? Just an outsider wondering how it works in Kenton.

See post #104

Thanks Birdbrain I missed it. Open Enrollment makes it nice for them. I would think that being in the 8th region would help with that. Thinking it is easier to win than the 9th.

Open enrollment.

Open enrollment still doesn't give coaches the right to go out and recruit kids, just gives the kids a choice of high schools!!

Absolutely correct, each one of these kids have chosen to go to sk as has other kids have chosen to go to Dixie or Scott That's the kids and parents choice.

LIKE your post... I think one thing that is different, let's use TC and SK for example. I would hazard to guess that probably 70 to 80% of the people in Bedford were born and raised there. There is probably a legacy of 3 or maybe more generations of families that were born there, went to school there, go to same churches, etc. I have found this time and time again in smaller, more less rural communities. Don't get me wrong..I think it's awesome, just like I thought it was awesome to see the community come and support the girls during the Regional tournament. You have a little bit of that in a community like Independence, but no where close to towns like Bedford. I would say the percentages are reversed. Most families are transplants for work reasons, or the fact it is just a nice area to live and raise a family, but aren't connected to the school. I too am disappointed that there is not more support from the close to 1800 student population, especially since most of them live within 5 miles of the school. I have seen this community pull together for special events or to support a cause.

Yes and no. Yes, students can choose to apply for open enrollment, and attend one of the Kenton County schools outside of the school they are districted for. However, there is a process, and not all open enrollment applications are accepted. If your grades are solid, and you've stayed out of trouble, then yes, you can go to whichever Kenton County School you want. If not, well, you really don't have much of a choice, and you won't be open enrolling anywhere.

Good point; I think it also depends if there is room. I believe SK may be at capacity now; not involved in the school any longer so I'm not exactly sure about that but at 1700-1800 it has to be close.

With respect to middle schoolers, you can't be districted to eventually go to Scott/Dixie and play at SK.

No doubt; great points and your percentages are probably close. But as you said, 1,800 students and I would say there were less than 20 there.

Between the boys and girls tourney, there were 4 district games and 4 regional games...not a single student section at any of those 8 games. There aren't may people who have seen more SK sports games than me but I can't ever remember seeing this. Maybe the kids didn't realize they could have had a day off if they had gotten to state and won a game!

I've beat this dead horse enough and this will be my last comments on this topic but our schools are our communities. I'd like to hope that the stakeholders of students, teachers, administrators and the communities don't lose sight of this. Yeah, I'm naive but I enjoyed watching the Wagners and Cooks support SK for decades setting a wonderful example.
