All too often underdog team fan-bases come to the support of their team, paint up, cheer like mad, but then go home unfulfilled.

While this Trimble team is certainly not chopped liver and had won their previous ten games and were coming off of a win over Walton-Verona, I wonder how many of those Trimble players, coaches, students and fans, actually and honestly drove to Shelbyville last night expecting to see their team slay Goliath and cut down the nets. They probably hoped like mad that they would win - But did they actually think that it would happen??? Deep down in their hearts, probably not.

 

This is what makes it so special when the underdog pulls the upset Unexpected victory is by far the sweetest. Especially with a trip to the State Tournament as the prize behind Door Number Two.

 

When they announced at the Campbell County Middle School (site of the 10th Region Championship Game) that the just victorious Lady Camels would play Trimble County at 6:30pm Thursday night, everyone in attendance thought that there must have been some mistake, that the PA announcer thought that last night's game with Walton was the finals. Shame on us for forming a stereotype of both Simon Kenton (superior and invincible) and Trimble County (cute that they beat Walton and came this far, but certainly no match for the Lady Pioneers).

 

Congratulations to every one of those students who came to support their team, albeit actually expecting to see them accept the runner-up trophy, and prepared to accept the actuality that they simply weren't good enough to beat SK.

 

I've been fortunate enough to have experienced this - a gratifying victory with huge implications. I'm sure that their bus floated back up to Bedford, and I hope that someone turned on the lights in the Trimble gym, hastily ordered some pizza, and then had a wild reception for their team tonight. These are the things of which lifetime memories are made.

 

Somewhere along the interstate there is probably a discarded 8th Region runner-up trophy. It was probably a very quiet ride back to Independence for the Lady Pioneers (the bigger they are the harder they fall). There is no consolation that can be heaped on them tonight or in the near future. I'm sure they expected to cut the nets down last night and expected to play at the BB&T next Thursday night. I too have been on that side of the coin too many times. Perhaps they can take solace in the fact that IF they weren't good - really good, this wouldn't be such a very extra-special night for the Lady Raiders.

 

Congratulations to the Lady Raiders and the Trimble County community, and condolences to the Lady Pioneers, especially that one senior, who won't get a second chance.

IMO, SK's Shelby Harmeyer kept Simon in the game. She had some very timely and big threes when her team needed them. And some of them seemed to try to shift momentum, although Trimble would prove to remain poised.

 

Trimble's Shelbe Black had some big time three's of her own. And yes it is something to see a big go out there and stroke it. She played a dandy of a ball game.

 

This was the first time I had seen SK be "outbigged" if that is a word. I knew Trimble size would give them some trouble, but I honestly thought that SK would turn it into a track meet sooner in the game rather than later, using their bench depth as an advantage.

 

SK will definitely be back. They are very good, but they were also very young. Like other teams in the past that learned from a heartbreaking loss, it will only mature them for the days ahead.

Congrats to Coach Stewart and the Raiders, I am extremely excited for them. Folks this is only the 6th time in 8th Region history that a small school has won the 8th: Gallatin County 1997, Walton Verona 2011 and 2012, and Trimble County 1976, 1981, and now 2016. I know that scon36 and TB&G are really enjoying this moment.

Mustang, the truth is that it can be over for anyone on any given night in the regional, especially if you underestimate your opponent, which seems to be the case here, due to the amount of shock everyone besides the Lady Raiders and their fan base had.

 

Trimble County has been playing great basketball as of late. Their two juniors made the All Region team and scored their 1000th point in the same game this season. Their phenom of a freshman guard has improved leaps and bounds and can hit the three and remain poised under pressure. Their two senior starters can score big when a defense focuses on the juniors or the juniors get in foul trouble. Their senior reserve, who had been injured prior to the All A, was finding her stride and stamina again. Also, we've seen our team give other teams nightmares on defense, especially as of late. And then there is the shot blocking.

 

At the beginning of the season, Coach Stewart bought the team t-shirts that listed every year that followed 1981, the last year the Lady Raiders won the region. That's thirty five years. The listed ended with 2016 in the same color as 1981, because Coach Stewart told them that there would not be a 36th year without a regional title. She maintained that mantra through every loss and every victory. We all believed her, not blindly, but because we knew what our girls were capable of.

 

So no...the Trimble County players, coaches, and fans did not go to this game "expecting" it to be our last. Life has no guarantees, but we knew that we could win this.

Congratulations Trimble. SK could not hit the side of a barn tonight. I have to wonder how much of an effect 12 hours of bus rides had on the condition of this squad. They were all toast, not just one individual. Shelby did not do SK any favours either by scheduling the team furthest away with 8pm games.

 

The host school has NO control over the things you mentioned. You are an SK fan, you should remember Anderson County winning the 8th on SK's home floor in 2010, and Walton Verona winning on Anderson County's home floor in 2011. The bus rides have little or nothing to do with it.

Condolences also go out to Coach Stewart for the loss of her father-in-law to cancer last night. She has had a lot of her shoulders as of late, but all you see out of her is strength and resilience.

There is another thing that I have to put out there that perhaps was not a physical factor in the game, but I know there is truth to it.

 

The Trimble County players always, no matter what, win or lose, no matter how bad it hurts, choose to humble themselves before God after a game and give Him thanks in prayer. This is not a mechanical thing that causes win or losses, but it is a choice from the heart to just keep things in perspective after a game.

First of all, love your logo.. ROLL TIDE! The only thing I take exception to is the comment about SK underestimating their opponent. Many of the players have been in this position before, both in school ball and AAU, and this coaching staff is too good to allow that to happen. When a team is the reigning champion and picked to repeat since the end of last season, there is a lot of pressure to live up those expectations. plus when one looked at this matchup on paper, it didn't look like it would be much of a game. You had the reigning champs coming into this game riding a 12 game winning streak, playing lights out pressure defense and clicking on every cylinder. They had played the fewest number of games than any team in the tournament, and scored and averaged more points than any of the other 7 teams. BUT as many have stated in this forum, that's why they play the games. As far as the team goes, they did not underestimate their opponent.

There was an invitation immediately after the game. Trimble County's #15 went over to the SK coaches and team and asked if they would like to join. Most teams do, but not all.

I don't know about the players, but since there is such a large amount of shock at Trimble County's win, and someone going as far to ask if the Trimble County players, coaches and fans really thought they could win, obviously some people counted them out before the game even started. So, it's a valid observation.

 

On paper, the Lady Raiders were coming off a 10 game win streak, and had held their opponents to fewer points than any of the eight teams in the tournament (200 less points than SK, even having played one more game). But, as they say, the game is played on the hardwood and not on paper.
