With the tournaments starting tonight, what games are considered the biggest upsets in district play within the past 20 years?

That's the massive one.

2011 - Louisville Collegiate defeats St. X 45-43 in the 25th Region.

1996 Christian Co beat UHA. That Christian Co team was good, but the UHA team was probably the favorite to win the state title.

2013 Augusta over Mason County was huge, especially because it happened in The Fieldhouse.

indeed. It was magnified by how the 2012 District Final ended.

Feb. 27, 2001: 13-13 Daviess County beats #5 in the state (22-3) Owensboro with D1 signee Lamar Owen.

I don't think these will rank with those, but these are the ones that stand out to me in the 4th Region in that span (we don't get many):

 

2/26/2001 - 15th District - #4 Allen County-Scottsville 76 #1 Edmonson County 68 - Allen County-Scottsville entered the game at 3-24 and 0-6 in district play. One of their three wins on the year had come via forfeit. Edmonson County was 19-6, and all but one of those losses came to 4th Region teams that won over 20 games, including every region semifinalist. The Wildcats had defeated ACS by 10 and 16 during the season, and led by 11 points during the third quarter. But a late run saw the Patriots outscore Edmonson County by 11 during the fourth quarter, and the Patriots kept Edmonson County out of the region tournament, and a win shy of 20 wins. The loss was a crushing blow to the Edmonson County program - it would take nearly four seasons before Edmonson County won 20 games in total, and they never returned for their first 4th Region tournament appearance since 1993. They were redistricted to the 3rd Region in 2006.

 

2/24/2009 - 15th District - #4 Barren County 48 #1 Glasgow 44 OT - In a very similar story, Barren County entered at 4-23 and 1-5 in district play. Glasgow was 18-5, but had had a close call at their rival in early January, winning only by 4. But they had won by 25 when the teams met at the end of the month. Glasgow was led by Cameron Hall, a junior who was named POY for the region and averaged 23.4 points per game. He scored at least 20 points in every game but four - one of those four was this one, as he had only 14. Glasgow led by as many as 8, but could never fully shake the Trojans. Glasgow had beaten both teams that played in the region finals that year.

 

 

There are two other instances of a 4 beating a 1 in the 4th Region, but neither matches the magnitude of those.

This one is really a Regional upset...

 

Newport over the last 20 years have rarely, if ever been favored to win the 36th District, or the 9th Region for that matter. The district ordinarily went to either NewCath or Highlands.

 

However...

 

In 2010, and just as many had expected considering history, NewCath beat Newport in the 36th District Championship game by a large margin 63-38, which would be their 3rd and last meeting of the season with NewCath taking 2 of the 3, but with Newport having won the highly treasured 9th Region All "A" Championship game between the two about a month earlier.

 

The margin of victory was to many an indication that NewCath was hitting their post season stride and that Newport, though no slouch, must not be nearly the threat that they were earlier considered to be.

 

Then...

 

Newport, as the 36th District Runner-up, went on to win the 9th Region Tournament by beating...

 

 

Ryle 62-46

 

CovCath 59-48

 

 

and then for the title of the 9th Region Champs...

 

Newport beat the highly favored state ranked defending 2009 State Champs...

I always wondered what happened to the 96 UHA team. That team was loaded! Barnes, Victor, Swanagan, Forest and can't remember the other

I believe the other starter was Andre Buckner. That UHA team was the only Kentucky team to ever win the prestigious Beach Ball Classic.

These were the two that first came to my mind.

In 2003-04, 2-22 Magoffin County beat 14-12 Johnson Central in the 57th District Tournament. That's one of the all-time upsets.

Does anyone remember how packed the Igloo got for 2014 district? Was that crowd bigger or smaller than when Brossart and Pendleton played in 2005 at Bracken County? The year PC won region.
