Was that crowd bigger or smaller than when Brossart and Pendleton played in 2005 at Bracken County? The year PC won region.

 

I was at the Brossart/Pendleton game in 2005. Stood in the doorway with Pendleton's baseball coach. There was nowhere else to sit.

Does anyone remember how packed the Igloo got for 2014 district? Was that crowd bigger or smaller than when Brossart and Pendleton played in 2005 at Bracken County? The year PC won region.

My guess is these are the two most crowded events The Igloo has ever hosted. Which one had more I cannot tell. I do know the attendance in 2014 was 1,476.

This one is really a Regional upset...

 

Newport over the last 20 years have rarely, if ever been favored to win the 36th District, or the 9th Region for that matter. The district ordinarily went to either NewCath or Highlands.

 

However...

 

In 2010, and just as many had expected considering history, NewCath beat Newport in the 36th District Championship game by a large margin 63-38, which would be their 3rd and last meeting of the season with NewCath taking 2 of the 3, but with Newport having won the highly treasured 9th Region All "A" Championship game between the two about a month earlier.

 

The margin of victory was to many an indication that NewCath was hitting their post season stride and that Newport, though no slouch, must not be nearly the threat that they were earlier considered to be.

 

Then...

 

Newport, as the 36th District Runner-up, went on to win the 9th Region Tournament by beating...

 

 

Ryle 62-46

 

CovCath 59-48

 

 

and then for the title of the 9th Region Champs...

 

Newport beat the highly favored state ranked defending 2009 State Champs...

 

 

Holmes Bulldogs - 60-34

 

NOBODY in their right mind would have picked Newport in this game, and the margin was even more unbelievable.

Mason County vs Bracken County girls and boys games tomorrow will be jam packed. They are planning on placing overflow people in classrooms to watch the game on streamed in video. I bet that goes over well!

Exactly 40 years ago this week, Bellevue pulled off one of the biggest upsets in 35th District history by knocking off heavily favored Newport in the first round. Newport had just concluded the regular season by knocking off Holmes and Newport Catholic. Steve Ridder and his Bellevue teammates stunned the 9th Region by eliminating Newport - with Dickie Boothe, Mitch McIntosh, Leonard Slaughter, Fred Lane, Rob Allen, Clint Miller, Darrell Bedord - in the first round of district play. That Bellevue team advanced to the regional and also upset Highlands. Can the Tigers repeat history exactly 40 years later vs. Newport in the first round?

2005, Carlisle County over Hickman County @ Hickman County.

 

Carlisle was 6-18 and had not won a district game and had lost to Hickman Co. by 13 and 22 @ Hickman that year.

In 1997, tiny Dawson Springs with a 12-13 record, knocked off Madisonville on the Maroons' home floor 61-60. When the home team beat Hopkins County Central the next night (it was a 3-team district,) it gave Dawson Springs its first district title since 1959.

 

Don Parson retired at season's end...after 30 years at Madisonville and 37 as a head coach...with 726 wins. At the time, it was 4th best in Kentucky history.

Anytime CovCath wins in the district it usually isn't an upset, but...

 

2012 at Regents Hall, CovCath (16-12) vs. Cov. Holy Cross (28-2). Holy Cross was ranked top 20 most of the season and won the All A. CovCath played a tough schedule and it was Ruthsatz 1st season. Holy Cross had multiple chances to put CCH away before overtime and in the 1st and 2nd OT, but CCH kept finding ways to stay in the game. Tony Campbell heaved a full court shot at the end of the 2nd OT that hit off the front of the rim. In the 3rd OT Ruthsatz and Tobler took over and like 1995, ended the season for one of the HC's best teams. Final 81-74 in triple overtime. Awesome game
