Cordia 47 Newport Central Catholic 41(All "A" State Semi-Final)

Featured Replies

It matters as far as qualifying as an All A member school.

So, are we saying there are some schools in this event that shouldn't be in it?

No. Every team in it are qualified to be in it. I'm just trying to explain to some of the above posts how the All A determines who is qualified. It has nothing to do with how the KHSAA determines their classifications. Because a school is 2 A in a KHSAA sports means absolutely nothing to the All A participation eligibility.

I would be interested in hearing Coach Dawn's post-game comments.

I agree. Some of the coaching decisions down the stretch were suspect at best. Especially the last two minutes.

They won their only district title in 1993. Beat Riverside Christian, Jackson City, and Knott County Central. Knocked off Owsley County in the first round of the regional before losing to M.C. Napier. They do have fifteen district runner-up trophies.
15 runner up trophies?
15 runner up trophies?

Yes, runner-up trophies for finishing second to the district winner (before both teams head to the regional tournament the following week). Being at Augusta and finishing second to Bracken, Pendleton, etc. all those years, surely you all have some runner-up trophies collecting dust.

Yes I'm quite sure I know what runner up trophies are. Pretty sure every school has a few "collecting dust" as you would call it. I'm glad that my qualifications of being from Augusta would justify my knowledge in them.

SHOTS FIRED Lol

Not just a tournament to the ones that are participating in it.

I understand that. I've put two kids through schools that participate and have much success in it. In the case of Cordia not participating, it's still just a tournament no matter how many rings you get for it. JMO

Yes. Fifteen times they lost the district final but did advance to the region. What is the question?

I thought it posted... What's the furthest that they've advanced in the regional?

I agree, but if there's one thing that separates the All A from just a regular tournament, such as a holiday tournament, is it's actually a statewide tournament involving all 16 regions. So, for small schools it's a little more than "just a tournament". It's a chance for a state championship in their size category.

Also, I think the All A is one reason that Kentucky will not go the direction of Indiana and most states and go to a class system in basketball. Without the creation of a 16 region state tournament in 1990 I believe the KHSAA would have eventually gone to classes.

My cousin who lives in Brookville, Indiana told me the class system had not been a good thing for their high school basketball. He said the spirit and emotion, and crowd numbers, just weren't the same anymore.

Four times to the semifinals:

1958 - beat Owsley County, lost to Whitesburg

1993 - beat Owsley County, lost to M.C. Napier

1994 - beat Powell County, lost to Hazard

2013 - beat Breathitt County, lost to Perry County Central

Did Weyer shoot something like 5/16?

Two worst games for NCC this year are CCH and Cordia. Interesting.
