The NYT described it thusly: "The North Water feels like the result of an encounter between Joseph Conrad and Cormac McCarthy in some run-down port as they offer each other a long, sour nod of recognition." So I was sold right there.

September 21, 201610 yr Thoughts? I really liked it. Finished this one last night. Really enjoyed it. Fun concept to involve language in a sort of science fiction plot. Reminded me of Stephenson's "Snow Crash" in that way. Only complaint was that it seemed to all wrap up and end too quickly after an epic build-up, but maybe that's the Tolkien fan in me... I need a book to have at least five endings.
September 23, 201610 yr This was as good a book as I've read in a month of Sundays. Gonna try to dig up some more by this author.
