July 18, 201610 yr Just got The Iron King by Maurice Druon. It's historical fiction about 14th century France and George R.R. Martin calls it "the original Game of Thrones." That was enough for me. Finished this one and it was quite good. There are seven in the series and I plan on getting the next one soon. I expected a narrative accounting of Phillip the IV's reign to be, well, boring, but I was lured in by Martin's recommendation. Even though you could spoil most of the plot by clicking on Wikipedia (or by having extensive knowledge of French monarchs), Druon manages to pull out enough suspense and intrigue to keep the pages turning.
July 23, 201610 yr This was really good, especially if you like medieval history. It would, in my opinion, make for a very good movie. The chapter late in the book describing the fight was intense.
