What is deemed a Successful season/ program?

Featured Replies

RP, obviously winning championships should be every teams goals and can be used as A measure of success, but not THE measure. If that is your only measure of success for a high school athletic team, you are missing what I understand high school athletics to be about.

That statement doesn't specify INDIVIDUAL programs, just the student athlete in general, and I agree with it's sentiment.

Spin Alert!!

As I read the Trinity athletic mission statement again, its obvious what their values are. If you believe that statement to be more than just a PC phrase on their website (and I do), then it becomes a giant stretch to think that those sentiments encompass just the athlete, but not the programs the athletes participate in. Read the last sentence again and then tell me how you can mutually exclude those values set for your athletes from team values and then tell them their team wasn't a success if they didn't win the title.

So, you're saying that the years that a school does NOT win a championship, that the program was unsuccessful? What about if several years go by without a championship? Should they just pack it in and concede they're not successful?

I agree RM, that would mean only 4 programs had successful season. A title is just not the only measure of true success.

For different schools it means different things. Some schools just want to have a winning season (above .500) UK fans can relate. Some schools want to win their district and for others it Regional titles means a successful season. Then the chosen few it's State Titles. I believe in setting realistic goals and then surpassing them it's titles for some and for others it lower titles. Success means to strive to be better every year and make it. I'm a Southwestern supporter and believe every year is a success even though we are still looking for that Regional title but with Boyle Co. in our district what can you do, but we've been close to getting them a couple of times but they were and are a tough bunch to beat ask others. I won't make a list. I visually see the success of our program every time I go to Krogers kids from class 2004, 2005, 2006 are there working. Looks to me like all they have to do is put on their job app. that they played football for Southwestern. At one time I believe there were 10 to 12 kids from the team working. Success in the working world is HIGH ON MY LIST.

Exactly. In defense of RP, at Trinity a successful season includes winning a title. It's a corner stone. THE goal. If we don't win a title, it does not mean the team did not have fun, play hard, learn life lessons, etc. It's just the way it is. Had we not won the title last year, it would not have been a success in my mind, and in the mind of many of Trinity fans.

Other's may have different ways of defining success. But I think at top programs, regardless of the sport, they do not define a season with out a title as a success.

^ that's it....I am not taking away from others nor am I trying to speak for other programs, sports, etc....I know what, IN MY MIND, Trinity needs to do be considered successful, and that's all.

Championship football is what Trinity has come to expect.

Gosh, what is wrong with that?

A sucessful season for Belfry involves a Regional Championship IMO.

A successful program?

CHAMPIONSHIPS....end of story.

That is completely wrong IMO. So are you saying as an example if a small school who dont have many kids to choose from but goes out and wins 7 or 8 games and makes it to the playoffs, it still wouldn't be a successful season. For many small schools making it to the playoffs every year would be a successful season. Actually for most schools across the state if you make the playoffs every year it would be a very successful program.

Yeah for schools like Trinity, St. X, Highlands, Cov. Cath, Beechwood, NCC, etc. you do need to win championships to be a successful program and that is what they are known for.

But most schools dont have players that come to there school just to play football like those schools, other schools have to deal with what they are given. So just making it to the playoffs every year for most schools would make it a successful program.

So saying winning "championships end of the story" is the only way to be a successful program is completely wrong IMO.

I'm glad you agree with us. Thanks for you kind words.

I'll tell you what is not a successful season.

A team going 2-8 in the fall of 2007 and making the playoffs in the new Kentucky six class system.

It will happen and validates the fact that six football classes in Kentucky is a disgrace!

That took place this year and has taken place for several years with the class system we have now. So the class system we have now with four classes sending teams to the playoffs with 0-10 records is not a disgrace? I am not saying it is, I am simply pointing out that it happens now and I believe that the six class system will give MORE student/athletes the opportunity to get rewarded for the hard work they put in. If we are overlooking the entire point of HS athletics then it is sad. Coaches, administrators, parents, fans, etc. should remember it is about the kids and not the parents, fans, coaches money nor anything other than the kids.

And if you read all of my posts you would've noticed that I only reference Trinity in this thread.

So with this philosophy and the new 87% getting in.....is that really successful....or is not making it, simply awful.

Successful Program - Multiple region championships or state championships in a matter of a few years.

Successful Season - Going Undefeated, winning district and region or a state championship.

If a program consistently wins and sends kids on to play/attend college, they have kids who are going to succeed in life and that is my definition of a successful program.

If a program gets the most out of the players and have kids that sacrifice and work their tails off to help the team, then that is also a succesful program for the same reason as listed above, ... the kids are learning how to succeed in life.

Also, you HAVE to look at wins/championships. When a team/program like Trinity, X, Highlands, Danville, Boyle Co continue to win ball games and titles, it is hard not to put them on the very top of the list for successful programs.

:thumb: :thumb:Great post MT and I 100% agree, the kind of kids a school/program puts out and sends to college (football or not) defines a big part of a sucsessful program. I don't think that state titles are the only definition of a sucsessful program but consistent winning seasons, district titles and consistent playoff appearences do define a program along with producing good kids who become good adults. A tradition of winning instills pride not only in the players but in the student body, school, parents and community as a whole. It also gains respect from other schools/communities on what another school has achieved over a long period of time. I also agree that the programs with multiple state titles gain and deserve the respect they get and are obviously sucsessful programs but that is imo not the only criteria.
