What is deemed a Successful season/ program?

Featured Replies

RockPride, if it's simply about championships, it's really a shallow program, don't you think?

Well sure it would make for a shallow program. But at the forefront, if you are not winning championships (when you are used to doing so), the whole program will not be the same, or at least as we know it at Trinity. We have some of the best facilities, tradition, coaches, players, fans, etc....because of winning championships, shallow or not, all the icing is a direct result of baking THAT cake. Terrible pun, but it holds water.

I would argue that your cause and effect are reversed. You win championships because of your tradition, facilities, coaches, players, fans, etc.

Winning state championships should always be the primary goal; but it's not the only goal, nor is it the soul measure of success.

^ so in 1968, 72, and 73....we had the tradition, and facilities, etc...

it can be argued that we didn't have the best facilities until well after #12...I think winning brings the latter, but that's just this humble man :)

Not so much the facilities; but the other elements.

Actually, I think it becomes a self-sustaining cycle.

All the “little things” are expected to accomplished. It’s a given that the kids will make the grades, say their prayers, etc. If they are not, then we have other things to address than winning. But that being said, most of our kids do exactly what they should as Trinity football players. Therefore, what is left is the winning.

I love this kind of thread. IMO success should be measured by consistantly living up to the potential of the kids you have. Some years you may be a bit down. Some years you may be loaded. If you have 5 D1 prospects and a couple of other all-staters you should win a championship. But a team with 30 players and only minimal talent that makes the play-offs and competes in every game is just as successful in my book. The lessons in football should be about striving to succeed. That doesn't mean you accept less than winning from your kids. Otherwise everyone should just get a participation trophy and go home. But, at the end of the day, if you can say you got as much out of your kids as they had to give, both they and you can find something to take pride in.

Excellent point! I agree.:thumb: :thumb:

Thanks GoldenEagle. I think we lose site of what we are supposed to be teaching kids through sports sometimes.
