Increase in individual scoring

Featured Replies

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like more and more players are scoring in the high 30s, 40s, and 50s. What can we attribute these amazing performances to? Is it because the refs are calling more hand checks, amazing individual talent, teams depending on one player to score, or something else?

Probably a blend of all. My guess is those scoring in that range are hitting a lot of FTs.

Combo of hand checking, and a lot of kids don't show the willingness to sit down and play solid defense. When they do it sticks out. One kid that comes to mind is Eastern's Javen Rushin. Made Goodin work in the scrimmage vs Taylor Co., and locked down Thompson vs Central. You rarely see kids sliding their feet, playing solid d on the ball, and being in the right spot helpside.

Increased emphasis on 1000 point club, kids want the kudos of lots of points so they don't pass off. Overall high school basketball has evolved into "look at me" type selfish game.

There. I said it.

The game is evolving. Transition pull up 3's are in. Taking charges is out.

Scoring is the newest emphasis (We see this with rule changes in NBA and college).

I have no empirical data to back this up, but I have the sense that, with increased mobility between schools, more good players are concentrated at a smaller number of schools. That leaves the other schools more likely to need to rely on a single or small number of players, whose scoring increases.

BINGO....we need a rebound/assist club instead of points. it would be interesting to see the shooting % of the players in the 1000 point clubs.

I feel like scoring is up overall, which would lead to individual scoring being up as well.

You guys do recall in the 40's 50's and 60's there were lots of teams that would have one player averaging in upper 30's to 40's and take all the shots. Scoring for individuals was very high long ago (Example: Ervin Stepp) then went down and is now back up (just slightly for only a few teams).

The only thing that I completely agree with is that defense is not being played at a high level. Not to say it was in the past, but the overall defense I see on a nightly basis is very weak.

I will go with the bold.

I think a lot of it has to do with free throws. Officials are calling things tighter, and kids do a lot of hand-checking.

Ervin Stepp and King Kelly laughed at this post.

There are also more reports of it happening because of social media. There have always been 40-point games. Now there are people posting about it as it happens.

How many have there been this year? Anyone that can put together a quick summary of 40 point games statewide to this point?

Ervin Stepp isn't impressed with 40 point games.
