Congrats to Coach Morris and the Cards.

This was a pretty even game that was greatly affected by an officiating mistake on a muffed punt.

Either way, the Mayfield Cardinals earned the win. Look out 2A, the Cards are in town.

Congrats to Mayfield on another state title.

Bad place to make a blunder like that. That's not some obscure rule for high school.

Just can't happen. May not have changed the outcome, it just can't happen on that stage.

Agreed.

Just can't happen. May not have changed the outcome, it just can't happen on that stage.

No doubt.

With all due respect, what contributed to Newcath's loss today was the Cardinal defense...much more than one bad call by an official. They had the ball for 11 of 12 minutes in the first quarter and did not score one point...that was huge. Another great game by the Cardinal defense! Our running game was non existent, and we still found a way to win. That's what champions do. Hats off to the Newcath's defense...they were really tough.

Big time congrats to the seniors on this Mayfield team. 4 rings!!! Pretty amazing to say the least. I was very impressed with the NCC defense. They were beast against the run. Hard fought game the the Cards pulled out. Hope to see a rematch next year!

4 rings are impressive.

Congratulations Mayfield, very impressive run!

Also congratulations to NCC who fought back all year and gave a great effort today.

It's a great day to be a MAYFIELD CARDINAL !!!

Amen, wasn't pretty, and I don't feel our offense ever clicked, and you have to give the NCC defense props, but we dropped way to many passes, and several bad passes, including what was an easy touchdown on our last possession. Anyway, we put ourselves in position to win, and we did! Props to NCC, you have a fine team.

NCC stayed in the game due to their run defense.. They just knocked Mayfields OL backwards most of the game and poor Trajon barely got the handoff befire he had 3 guys in his grill.. The amazing thing to me was as good as the NCC D was against the run, they got absolutely no pressure on the QB against the pass.. I thought that Mayfield's D won the game for them.. With exception of a couple of Smith runs and the long TD pass, the Breds offense really didn't threaten much throughout the game.. I love the Cardinal LB corp of Arnett, Hurt, Workman and the other kids name escapes me, but, they're all over the place on every play.. Coach Joe may have done his best coaching job this year as they simply didn't have any size or depth on the OL and DL and he went out and put his best athletes on the field in positions they weren't used to playing and they toughed it out for another title.. IMO, no way should they have beaten OB Cath or Desales to even be that far..

The blown call was one of the two biggest turning points in the game, it changed the trajectory of the game, but it did not decide the winner.

NewCath played Championship caliber Defense and the Bred DLine dominated the Cardinal front, and gave them every chance to win the game.

With that said, to quote my favorite television show of all-time, HBO's "The Wire"

If you come after the King, you best not miss.

How many times have we seen it? Mayfield may not play perfect...but they just make every single key play needed to raise the trophy. I thought Caldwell was outstanding and Arnett was fantastic after the First . Sidney Herndon was a game changer both place kicking and punting. The ultimate compliment though is NewCath just caused the ball to bounce their way. Tipped pass that goes for a long catch and run. Being there and having a punt inside the 5 that even created the controversy. The offsides on 4th and 1. The forced fumble in the 4th Quarter.

Those are the plays that State Champions makes.
