Way to go Mayfield. A tremendous accomplishment for this team, and of course the senior class. This team won games playing about every style possible and against every type of opponent.

 

Today's game was kinda bleh, as much as winning a state title can be bleh (Translation: it was a lot of fun). Their defensive line (NCC's) really stood out, and that kept the game close, but from my biased perspective there is "close, and the outcome of the game is in serious contention" and "close, but a win appears pretty likely." This felt like the latter.

 

Mayfield's defense came ready to hit today, lots of big time hits with the tackles. Seemed to me to be a lot of activity after the whistle, as if NCC watched a bunch of Murray film and took notes.

 

This team was a lot of fun to watch, I think the turning point of the season was the comeback against Caldwell. Just felt like, seemed like, smelled like that after that, the boys just were not going to let themselves lose a game.

I'm suprised Bright got that many, are you counting the yards he ran from the dressing room? Not bashing him, he's a Great running back, he just had no where to go, NCC did an awesome job stopping our running game.

I did. So did a couple of the guys sitting around me. It wasn't just blatantly obvious but it was there, every so often.

As a Cardinal fan I can't help but already be excited about next year. Stop and look at what we return. That's scary good for us. Losing receivers and kicker. Receivers are a deep spot. Kicker is going to hurt though. Oh well Back to enjoying this one for now

Might have be the results of the many hands to the face (under the facemask) and facemask grabs by Mayfield.

Woke up Monday feeling great.

 

Wanted to point the following out, in the semi-finals, there was a clash between two teams, one a two-time defending state champion and the other a three-time defending state champion. That surely can't have happened often as it could only occur when there is a re-classification.

 

Then in the finals, both teams were making at least their fourth consecutive appearance in the title game.

 

So, .......way to go Mayfield. That is an accomplishment. You didn't just win the 2A state championship, you slayed every dragon that 2A could summon to put in your path. GO BIG RED!

After a long couple days it is great to be home and see the trophy residing over at MHS for all eternity. As I sit at my desk this morning not really wanting to begin work after a football marathon week end I had a few thoughts. MF had to come from behind 6 times this year, should have been 7 yesterday but NCC failed to grap the early lead when they had the chance. I was surprised MF was able to pull off another title this year. The concern at the beginning of the year was the mostly sophomore offensive line, a huge obstacle to overcome. The Cards had to be creative all season to overcome this, especially in the playoffs. The Cards had to run the ball to beat DeSales, they had to pass to get past NCC and needed balance to get past OC. The versatility of the Cards offense to take or get what was available to them was a difference maker for the offense and thank goodness the Cards defense was a rock all season long. While the offense struggled at times, the defense never waivered. The job DC Cliff Dew does is nothing short of amazing. Not many if any other staffs, offensively and defensively, for the Cards, could have taken the pieces they had this year and get this kind of result. We are blessed to have the caliber staff but great coaching has been a backbone to Mayfield Football since day 1 a hundred years ago.

I would have loved to have had a much larger margin of victory yesterday but on the other hand I am grateful to have a victory period. This game actually went largely like it appeared it would. NCC was very talented but all year long failed to play to their potential largely due to being mistake prone and the turnovers coupled with MF's ability to adapt to what they could get, in this case MF was never going anywhere running so we passed, was the difference in my opinion.

Maybe see these 2 again next year, Cards fans have to be excited with what returns and I expect that young Cards line to develop into a force. As I said yesterday, this never gets old and it s great to be a Mayfield Cardinal!

I agree, 3 Newcath turnovers compared to Mayfield's 0 Is a huge stat.

 

I am also surprised to see Marfield have more success in the air than the ground. What happened to the NCC secondary? In the same sense, what happened to their pass rush?
