I didn't know Europe was in Morgan Co. All of Rose Hill's players were Americans.

So very, very true. This is what was the worst part of the entire Rose Hill deal. The fact that a group of kids grow up together and play together their entire lives, only to lose to an all-star team using not only the state of Kentucky, but other states as well. How is that fair? Just proves that something has to be done with the privates, as it is not an even playing field for the publics.

Financially, I believe all of our area schools could use a few more fiascos like in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.

 

As for attendance, MSU graduations don't draw near as well as did the primetimers.

It could be that the MSU graduation draws as much as did those regional games. However, I think that you will agree that the entertainment was much superior at the games. Also, for those who seem to still feel the emotional pain of those two years, maybe you would feel better if you returned all of that extra money that you earned during that time.

Ashland pulls the mother of all upsets with Buddy at the helm and wins the region.

So, let me get this straight, the kids at Ashland, Russell, Raceland, Boyd, East and West, Fairview and so on didn't dream of going to Rupp. It appears that only Morgan's dreams were shattered. It amazes me how folks can't get over it. Morgan did have a quality team, but in my opinion, would not have gotten as far as RH did and would quite probably made the typical first round 16th region departure from the sweet-16. The difference here is the quality of the kids that were there. If it were just another decent kid and this would have happened, no dispute. However, it happened to be the #1 player in the nation in his class. Sorry!!! I'll bet that when his name is called as the first player named in the NBA draft that no one who was on that floor for Morgan those 2 seasons will be saying to whomever they're with,,,,"I played against that guy when I was in high school". :sssh:

I am not sure about the quality of some of these kids. Unless of course you are talking on the court, off the court may be a different story.

Of course I was talking about them as players, no one would have cared otherwise if the were mediocre players. With regards to off the court, not many in this forum knew them in this regard either but sure do seem to sound like they do.

I'm not sure how we can even start to compare the enterainment of a regional tournament basketball game and a college graduation. That's like comparing a Geo Metro and a submarine.

Do I just live in my own little world over here, or doesn't recruiting and school hopping go on everywhere? From as young as little league you have kids whose mommy and daddy don't like Jr.'s playing time so they move to a different district (and throw a fit when they aren't eligible for All-Stars). I went to Ashland in the late 70's and 80's and the big controversy back then was when Coach Ernie Simpson supposedly enticed Chuck Cantrell from Ceredo/Kenova in West Virginia. Later on, boys like Jeff Large and Daryl Arbaugh came up from Greenup County... the list goes on and on and could be applied to any sport. I think the big problem was, as was stated earlier on this forum, that in this particular case, instead of just another above average ball player, this area ran up against a phenomenon (or two) in the form of Bill Walker and OJ Mayo. I don't know either of these boys but could it be that someone just wanted them out of their bad situations in Huntington and to get into a good Christian environment? If OJ had chosen Ashland as his home, or any public school, would there have been this much chaos attached to this time in 16th region basketball? How about all the kids from the Ramey home that play for Boyd County? Those kids are from all over the state, right? Anybody remember Frank Lee? Everybody twisted their mouth about him being at Boyd Co., but nobody refused to play them. When Chris Jennings came to Fairview to play football, he did not cause this kind of firestorm... he was a kid who caused a lot of other people to step up their own game, and isn't that what competition is all about? It seems like the kids themselves are never the heart of the problem... it's always the grown-ups who ruin the fun!!

Excellent post Coacheswife, but you could legitimately identify three dozen quality "transfers" to Ashland and Boyd County over the past 30 years and you'd still get posts like this one:
