That's right, the football season not corresponding with the actual graduation year always throws me off.

Lexington Catholic is in their 11th straight.

 

Last miss was 2004, losing to Covington Catholic in second round.

 

They also missed in 2003, losing to Oldham County in second round.

 

These two years are the only gap going back to 1997.

 

The first year of the program was 1991.

Does anyone have the time and reference books to see what schools have won the most regional titles since the inception of the playoffs in 1959? I would imagine many of us could name 6-7 of the top 10 by picking the usual suspects.

I did some quick research and I believe New Cath's streak of regional finals appearances goes all the way back to 1999, when they lost in round 2 to Bellevue. That puts their streak at 16 consecutive regional finals if I am right.

Yes, the strange thing about that is Beechwood and New Cath were in the same district prior to 2007. However, because of the way the brackets went those two did not meet till the regional finals in several of those years. There must have been a bracket change in there somewhere because Beechwood's streak was stopped by New Cath in 2006 before the regional finals.

Since 1-3 from one district are with 2-4 from the other district, therefore Beechwood (1) and NCC (3) were in the same four-team bracket/quad, eliminating the rematch in the region finals and instead forcing them to meet in the semis.

 

No bracket change, just NCC (5-5 in regular season) not getting its usual 1-2 seed.

Mayfield lost in the second round in 97, but has played at least 13 games every season starting in 1998.

 

So the Cardinals are in their 18th consecutive region final (and 25th in the last 26 years with 97 being the only hiccup starting in 1990).

I can speak for Mayfield from the 1976 season to present. In the time period the Cards have played in the regional all but 3 times the one being the aforementioned Murray 1997 game and there were 2 hiccups in the early 1980's to Ft Campbell. So as of the game Friday the Cards will have played in 37 of the last 40 regional title games. Before 1976 I have no idea. The way I was able to know this is because I have always collected the team schedule posters that are still put out by the school to this very day. I have almost all of them from 1976 forward

This team was the 1st team in state history to win all 5 Playoff games on the road, as well as, the 1st team to win a State Title with 5 losses.

How about Belfry? They are the only team I can think of that might challenge Mayfield's streak.

I remember the inter-districts.

 

However, 1-3 would be grouped together in the first round (district semis for interdistrict; region quarters for crossdistrict) or second (district final for interdistrict, region semis for crossdistrict) no matter what.

 

Interdistrict or crossdistrict, Beechwood-NCC would NOT have met in the region final that year no matter what (crossdistrict or not because they were seeded 1-3 and not 1-2). If they were 1-2, then the interdistrict argument could have applied.

Serious question, is there something wrong with our system or overall standard of play if team's advance in the playoffs this far, this often? Not taking away anything from those who have accomplished this (amazing) feat.
