It Appears We Have a Notre Dame Problem

Featured Replies

What will be interesting is all of these (1) loss teams at the end of the year. Florida intrigues me, they have won the East already, if they beat Bama in SEC title game, which I dont think they will, arent' they in? The loss to Texas kills Oklahoma I think no matter what, Notre Dame lost to the #1 seed on the road at the end of the game, big difference in their 1 loss. MSU lost on a referee blunder, If MSU wins out they are in I think. Trust me I a Leprechaun fan, the only way Notre Dame gets in is with some help I think. They need some to lose, and I think some of them will

That also happened last year. They also beat VT this year. Beat Navy last year. Beat Bama. Beat Oregon. Smacked Wisconsin. Beat MSU.

22 game win streak, and only 3 losses in 50 games since Urban has been HC and still can't get respect.

Still can't get respect? The only reason they are in the top 4 is because of respect, by all means they do not deserve to be in the top 4 except for respect of what they did last year.

Florida confuses me. How can they look that bad against Vandy? I was arguing for them last week. If I were a ND fan it would feel like a win and you're in situation. I think they get in over any 1 loss Big 12 team, and MSU if they win out.

Baylor v ND w/ ND winning at Stanford, I agree. Oklahoma w/ that gauntlet at the end of the year, I don't see it. I don't see them winning all 3 though either.

All 4 Big 12 teams have to play each other, so they all are going to go through the same gauntlet.

I recall similar conversations last year about various teams. The consensus seemed to be expanding to 8 teams. Does anyone know if there has ever been any official comment on expanding the number of teams?

I have to own up to something here, I referenced my Top 10 Thread earlier on here and said I had ND over Iowa. I was wrong, I had Iowa over ND. Not that it really matters because I argued against Notre Dame in here anyways, but just thought I would clear that up.

Grant the reason people keep mentioning Notre Dames schedule is because it is ranked #5 right now.

I don't know why you are angry over this. The big 10 isn't getting two teams in and Iowa controls their own destiny . They win out they are in.

It doesn't help their cause during the regular season when they don't have the other 3 top teams in the Big 10 on their schedule.

The SEC has the potential not to get a bid. I don't think a one loss Big 12 team gets in over Notre Dame.

But at the end of the day it's to early to complain there are a lot of big games coming up in the next few weeks.

I know how strength of schedule works. Believe what you want to believe, but SOS takes into account how highly teams are regarded week by week, therefore in my eyes, that is speculation because you have no real way to see how good a team is until the end of the year. Also SOS does take into account the whole schedule not just who you have played so far. SOS is your schedule for the whole year.

Wrong, wrong again, and wrong some more. Before the season starts the SOS is based on who they think will do well, but that is not how it is during the year. Right now the rankings that have Notre Dame having the 5th best strength of schedule and that is based off of who they have played so far, and how those teams they have played so far have done. So Texas sucking has actually hurt Notre Dame's strength of schedule, just like when they play Wake Forest this week it will hurt Notre Dame's strength of schedule. Just like when they eventually play Stanford it will bump them up.

Has Notre Dame played top teams each and every week. However based off of the teams they have played so far, the strength of schedule shows that they have played more teams that are on average better than most teams have played on an average so far. So yes you really are completely wrong on all of this. Once the season starts playing out, and especially at this point of the year. The Strength of Schedule is just calculated based off what teams you have played so far, and not who you will eventually play. Which is why teams like OSU, TCU, Baylor, etc. have very poor strength of schedules currently because most of them haven't played anyone. Their schedules are backloaded though, and you will see their strength of schedule get better after those games. Its because the games not played yet aren't calculated in yet. Its really not a hard concept to figure out man.

You think so? I saw it the other way. Clemson was always on the verge of going off, they just couldn't in those conditions. I think in good weather, neutral site, Clemson wins 9 out of 10 times.

9 out of 10?

So what you're saying is after week 1, Virginia Tech had the highest strength of schedule since they played the number 1 team? I understand what you all are saying completely, yes SOS is recalculated week by week and it is a fluid statistic, but it takes into account the record of the teams you have left on your schedule. All 4 of the good Big 12 teams are all currently close to the top of strength of schedule because they are playing each other in the upcoming weeks. This is the only link I can find with current strength of schedule ratings so according to you all all of the Big 12 schools wouldn't be any where near the top, but here they are. It has to take into account who they have yet to play. https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/ranking/season-sos-by-other

I'm only angry at the thought that people are questioning my knowledge of how this works. I've only been saying the SOS is a flawed statistic in my eyes. Not angry, just a little confused as to why Notre Dame is held in such high regard in the committees eyes. I just don't see it. They don't pass the eye test.

Baylor has not played a team that is currently over .500 yet we say they're really good. How do we know?

You are using the option for the season option. The committee used the current SOS based on who they have played.

So yes you can see a difference compared to whom they have played compared to whom they will play. They are only looking at who they have played currently. Which is why Baylor is 51 now but based on who they will play they would be 6.

I know that the criteria for the committee is, and rightfully should be, only what has happened so far. That is the only fair way to do it. SOS for me should only be evaluated for the whole season though in order to present the clearest picture. But you cannot predict how a team will play against another based on SOS, that only furthers my point that SOS is a very flawed statistic.
