I'd have to look at overall SOS and how each performed. If your asking me who I think is better right now. I think ND.

 

ND is playing with house money right now. The biggest surprise they are where they are with 6 or 7 starters out for the year. This team has a ton coming back next year .

 

But as a football fan I root for ND and Cincy Bengals so around this time I expect to be disappointed.

If no common opponent then it would probably depend on who looks better doing it. Like last year OSU probably doesn't get in by simply beating Wisconsin in the big 10 championship. It took OSU flat out beating down Wisconsin for the committed to decide to have OSU jump the other teams into the final four. If Notre Dame wins out it would take OU looking dominant against those teams at the end to jump Notre Dame. Because even if they didn't have a common opponent. Notre Dame overall body of work and only losing to the top ranked team on the road with a freshman qb making his third start and committing 4 turnovers and still losing on the last play, looks better than a very bad loss to a bad Texas team. Oklahoma would have to look dominant in those wins to jump Notre Dame even without a common opponent.

It is called a free country. I love Florida State. I usually cheer for ACC teams. I like ND, Baylor and UC. I am really interested where Baylor ends up.

Well Oklahoma has the highest remaining strength of schedule of any team in the country. So if they win these games, they will have to go through a stretch tougher than any other team has faced all season. I wish they would just have a conference championship. It would make it so much easier. Granted I am an Ohio State fan, and if the Big 12 had a sole champion last year, Ohio State probably doesn't get in. But even besides that, I just think it sets all of the teams up for failure not having a champ game. A team has to go undefeated probably to get in from that conference. But every game from here on out from all B1G and Big 12 games are must win. After Illinois this week Ohio State will have to win 5 straight games against top 15 teams to win the championship. This is the best time of the year.

Anybody care to revisit this topic. I might be a bit biased, but it appears to me that the committees faith in Notre Dame at the time was more than justified. Looks like the committee had good reason to have Notre Dame ranked ahead of Iowa. We now have two common opponents between the two and Notre Dame had the better outcome each time. (ND 42- Pitt 30, Iowa 27- Pitt 24 / Stan 38 - ND 36, Stan 45 - Iowa 16).

 

As an Irish fan, I think I'm satisfied with the 3 losses. The games we lost were to three schools that will have a combined 3 or 4 losses all season. Two of those losses were by 2 point each on the road. I never felt good about the Ohio St. matchup so I was happy that they were able to get it tobe within 10 with 6 minutes left in the game.

 

It does feel weird to say that I am happy with 3 losses, but considering that Clemson, Ohio St. and Stanford are all likely to end up top 5 in the final rankings, it's really hard to complain too much. Average margin of defeat in all those games was less than a TD. I've not checked the schedules of all the teams, but I'll go out on a limb to say that Notre Dame is probably the only team that will have played 3 of the top 5 teams in the final rankings. When you combine the schedule with the fact that the Irish lost 19 players to injury over the course of the season I see no reason to be unhappy with the results.

 

I think the future is bright in South Bend. Many younger kids were able to get some experience this year. I watched every Irish game this year, and there were #'s out on the field yesterday that I don't recall seeing on the field before. Kizer played better than I ever would have imagined. I think Zaire is going to have trouble winning back the #1 QB slot.

What we learned over the last couple days is that the matchup we deserved in the Rose Bowl was OSU/Stanford. Iowa was a paper tiger all season and the close B1G title game gave folks a false positive on the Hawkeyes, beneficiaries of fluky scheduling and a weak Western Division.

 

OSU/Stanford and ND/Iowa would have been better games but I'd imagine the Fiesta folks worked HARD to get that OSU/ND matchup.

The future is definitely bright in South Bend, as long as Brian Kelly doesn't skip town. I was a little misguided with my thoughts on ND initially when I started this thread. ND would have put up a much better fight than MSU or OU. At the time, I just thought OU was playing like the best team in the country. But we saw how both of those teams played against Clemson. ND showed out much better. But the bolded I agree with 100%. I think Kizer is simply the better QB. Zaire is probably more dynamic, but I think Kizer would give them the better chance to win going forward. An off-season under his belt will serve him very well and ND should be a top 5 team to start the season next year.

I don't think Stanford would have given OSU any better of a game than Notre Dame. Stanford's defense was not as good as usual this year, OSU offense probably still would have put up a of points. Also OSU defense would have been able to slow down Stanford and McCatthety much better.

 

As for Notre Dame and Iowa. I think we would have saw Notre Dame take care of Iowa rather easily too. Osu failed to make the playoff but easily is the most talented team in the country. So they were going to take care of anyone in the new years bowl games outside of the playoffs imo. Then Iowa was going to get beat pretty good by teams who just missed the playoffs like Stanford and Notre Dame.
