Now I can't wait for players to start threatening not playing until they get paid. Players have figured out now, they have some power.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing this afternoon. It would probably take more than just one school, but say all the D1 football players announce on a Friday that they aren't playing tomorrow unless they start getting paid. Bet somebody would be writting some checks pretty fast. NCAA has too much to lose to not allow it if push come to shove.

 

I'm still surprised that somebody hasn't tried to put together a legitimate minor league system for football and basketball as an alternative to college. Probably wouldn't kill the NCAA completely but no way they would get the same amount of money from TV deals etc. if all of the NFL / NBA level talent was removed from the sport.

If the demands would have been somewhat reasonable, I think some good could come out of this. But when your first demand is for the president to apologize and admit he has "white privilege" and the second demand is to resign...so basically apologize for what we perceive you did wrong and then, oh by the way, still quit, they lost me. So let's say he did put his head in the sand. The only thing to satisfy the group is to apologize AND quit? I don't know the president and none of you do either. He could be a great guy or a total tool. But to expect the president to control the acts of a few on a campus of thousands is non-sense. And if he said "we don't condone racism" right after, it would not have changed a thing. I am amazed at how many people just want lip service...

And Pinkel just did what he had to do for HIM to survive. He HAD to stand up for his players of he would have not been able to recruit. He is no hero here IMO...he is just a coach of a mediocre team that did what he had to do to save his job...and if the president was collateral damage, so be it...

B-I-N-G-O! And as far as we know (the original article doesn't say) the original 2 perpetrators that used racial slurs may not have even been students, may have been "townies", and if so the university president would have no position of authority to do anything at all even if they could identify the men.

 

Ok look, sounds like the MU president might have not been the most sensitive guy in the world, maybe he could have avoided this by a simple "...this won't be tolerated" speech, maybe not. Maybe this was just the final straw on the camels back of a bunch of other incidents/issues/problems that's been going on with him/his office. If that's the case then maybe it was just a matter of time before he was gone, if not this then something else may have triggered it, but I don't know about those things if they exist so I can't speak on those. But, just based on this incident alone, seems like the death penalty for stealing a pack of gum if this was the primary reason he was ousted.

We demand that the University of Missouri creates and enforces comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff, and administration. This curriculum must be vetted, maintained, and overseen by a board comprised of students, staff, and faculty of color.

 

V. We demand that by the academic year 2017-2018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campus-wide to 10%.

 

VI. We demand that the University of Missouri composes a strategic 10 year plan by May 1, 2016 that will increase retention rates for marginalized students, sustain diversity curriculum and training, and promote a more safe and inclusive campus.

 

VII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals -- particularly those of color, boosting mental health outreach and programming across campus, increasing campus-­wide awareness and visibility of the counseling center, and reducing lengthy wait times for prospective clients.

I kept hearing that Butler and some others did not feel "safe" at MU. I just read the links talking about all the things that happened that precipitated the president being ousted. So two idiots said racist things to students and one idiot made a swastika out of feces (on a campus with thousands of students). That's it?? Nobody hit, shot, stabbed, threw anything...and people are feeling unsafe?? How about living in any inner city in the US and see if they feel safer...

 

Look, the President should have addressed the incidents but there is no way you can control the acts of at the most, three idiots who did the bad stuff. By the way, is the swastika a racist thing? I would think Jewish folks would be more upset than blacks at that...heck EVERYBODY should be offended by that.

 

Also, I don't blame the President for trying to get out of the situation when the group of protestors blocked his car. That is a scary position to be put in as he has NO IDEA who these people are or what they might do. You would have thought a lot more happened to lead to the President being ousted than what actually did IMO.

It was just a little bit of racism. Those black students and professors should just toughen up. This country has gone soft...
