Am I missing something here? Is it just me, or does this seem to be a lot of overreaction to two unrelated, "minor" incidents that may or may not have even been perpetrated by MU students? How often does a yahoo (probably half drunk and/or high) go by in a truck and shout out a racial slur or derogatory name at someone? Heck, it's happened to be on a few occasions and probably happens thousands of time a day to many different people all over the country. Then a kid walks up with a cell phone, is asked to leave and he mutters a derogatory word as he walks away. Now please no one go off here accusing me of taking up for the perpetrators, because that couldn't even be further from the truth. But does this show "systematic racism" on the campus, and is there anything any university president could do about it?

 

I mean really, is this in any way the fault of the university president? Sounds like someone got really upset because the president didn't respond to a blog in the way the blogger wanted him to, and this started the whole thing (again from what I gather from the posed article). This just seems like a huge overreaction.

 

As for the swastika in feces...that's just a sick individual and could be directed at many different groups, not just blacks, though they would definitely be included for sure.

 

Again, outside of just denouncing these acts I'm not sure what any university president can do about individual random acts like these. Now maybe there is a whole lot more going on that the article doesn't get into, but I would think if there were then the article would have mentioned those.

UM will have to write a $1M check to BYU if the game is cancelled.

I have read every link posted in this thread, but have yet to see a valid reason for anyone to starve themselves or to refuse to carry out the requirements of an athletic scholarship.

The university president didn't denounce the acts. That's the problem. He never denounced it at all. He just ignored it and never acknowledged it like it never happened. All he had to do was denounce it and he couldn't even do that. Now folks question his ability to properly lead. This is a perfect example of what is known as white privelige.

As president I will do all I can to eliminate racism here on campus and focus on making the University of Missouri and more diverse place that welcomes all races and ethnicities."

I'm with you. I don't think it would have taken much from the President to prevent all this. At the same time, after looking at those demands, I'm not sure that would have made a difference.

That was my first reaction to reading about the events. When I started going through the accounts of what happened, I was looking for a blatant racist act by students with little-to-no reaction from the President. Not necessarily the case here. Again, that doesn't mean some of what they are protesting isn't legitimate, I am not sure it warrants ousting a University President. Public outcry often wins.

I don't think he'll be ousted but I can see some of their demands being met. If he can issue a very public apology and commit to working on a more diverse faculty along with the mental health counseling then I can see the boycott ending quickly. Not all of the football players support the boycott but they are sticking together for now. At the end of the day they'll want to play and I'll be kind of surprised if they aren't back at practice by tomorrow. They've gotten some support from the governor, faculty and the coaching staff so far. I can see a compromise happening soon. This is an unneeded black eye for Mizzou and the state of Missouri. The pressure will be on the president to make this going away ASAP. I don't think he'll lose his job though unless he just says to hell with it and leaves.

They were talking about that on Mike and Mike this morning. Makes sense. This is a large group of players. You can take 5 players and all 5 won't be on board let alone 50+.
