But lets not forget, this whole thing was started by a guy who was mad that he didn't get the response he wanted from the president on his blog. If that never happened, this whole situation never turns out like this. I just think that sets a bad precedent.

 

I see your all's point on the message a resignation sends. But, on the other hand, you've got a whole population of students at your university who believes the administration doesn't have their back on an issue of overarching importance to them.

 

The various racial issues reported might seem minor or isolated, but again, the population it affects believes these issues are indicative of something larger and the administration has responded with what has amounted to shoulder shrugs. And that's especially true of the president. He's the guy who takes the heat in these situations, and his way of dealing with it has been some combination of ignoring it and very forced, insincere attempts at discussing it.*

 

If you're on the board of regents and increasingly large percentage of the university doesn't believe the president is able to handle an issue as intense as racial discrimination, then I don't know how why you would back him up. I mean, it's not as though the students are protesting that winter break is too short; he's lost all legitimacy as a leader.

 

*I also think he would still be the president if he did one of two things: 1) He defended the university from the outset, said they have a code of conduct, don't tolerate racial problems or abuse, and have handled all issues reported to them or 2) issued a mea culpa and agreed to dig in on the issue and work with students on how to improve the campus. He ended up doing something much more like a kid whose mom twists his ear and drags him off the playground: "Ugh, this isn't going away is it? Fine. What do you people want again? Yea, I'll try harder, good enough?"

So it isn't a university presidents job to address something as major as racism on his campus? Some can't grasp why going silent could result in losing that specific job? Really??? :ohbrother:

Now I can't wait for players to start threatening not playing until they get paid. Players have figured out now, they have some power.

Nope. Hopefully they can find a replacement that takes this issue more seriously and helps regain the trust of the student body they are hired to take care of...

I'm just happy that the Spike Lee looking guy can go back to eating his Ramen noodles now....that hunger strike had me worrying about the diet and well being of college students everywhere....

Your sarcasm is duly noted. But, not one post on this thread has hinted that racism does not exist, or does not exist on that campus. But, to assume that the president is responsible for it, or can even control it, is short sighted at best. Even if he had paid the lip service that was demanded, it still would not have been enough in the eyes of the offended. The list of demands is a good example of that.

The president stepping down was the ultimate demand, and I wouldn't call that lip service.

I'm all for athletes using there platforms to make a statement. Often times I don't agree with some of their statements i.e. the stuff that happened in Ferguson last year, but I fully support their right to protest un-violently. But I have yet to hear what exactly happened at the University that caused this to happen. What were the incidents? I have a hard time commenting on stuff like this until I hear what the incidents were that the university mishandled.

All because he wouldn't act like he cared and denounce racist acts happening to blacks on HIS CAMPUS on HIS WATCH. Had he done 1 minute of lip service to address those acts this wouldn't even be a story. And when the poop hit the fan instead of still coming out to denounce those acts and "fight for equality" he simply resigned. He did it to himself.

My only concern is the reason behind the president resigning. It's like the empty gesture IMO of SC taking down the flag. What? It took 9 deaths in a church? It felt completely empty to me.

 

This COULD be the same. If the president is a loser that's fine. My concern is the "why."

 

Was it because the football team got involved?

Was it because they were going to have to write a $1M check?

Was it because the football coach got involved?

 

Here's my guess : it was NOT because of the hunger strike or the 1950 group. They didn't do it IMO because they suddenly saw the light about the plight of minorities.

 

That's my issue. Will anything really change?
