McCraken Co volleyball team bus left school at 1030am today. They don't play until 330pm Friday. As I remember its about 3 hours from Paducah to Louisville. I don't get it. Seems like something most schools would frown upon.

Don't see anything wrong with getting up there and getting settled in. You don't want to travel 3 hours on game day

They probably wanted to get there early so they aren't exhausted in the morning from a long bus ride. Plus, they might be practicing at a local louisville gym today before they play in the morning.

They easily could have gone to school all day today and still arrived in Louisville at an early hour. When they got there today it was too early to even check-in at the hotel. They don't play until 330 on Friday.

For argument's sake, school lets out, get everything loaded and they get on the road at 3:30. That puts them to Louisville around 7:30, assuming they do not stop to eat. They probably would, so that would have them arriving at 8:30 or thereabouts.

Drive up, maybe have a practice, team dinner and then maybe a movie or something to relax team. Get up in the morning, team breakfast, some down time then go play.

Maybe it is their first trip to state? School district wants to make it a big deal to encourage others to want to play at state too? I don't see what the big deal is to miss a day of school to travel to Louisville after a long season of hard work.

McCracken was in the state quarterfinals last year.

1) Did McCracken pull out of the parking lot at exactly 10:30, or did they just leave class and load (could take an extra 30 minutes to an hour)? Was there a pep rally before?

 

2) Saying it is only 3 hours from McCracken County HS to Louisville Valley HS by bus is AVERAGING MORE than 74 miles per hour on the shortest/fastest route according to google maps (NOT including slowdown once you enter Louisville metro). You want a bus doing 75+ on the parkway?

 

3) You also forgot time zone change. That makes it a four-hour trip (or moves it to 11:30 from 10:30).

 

4) Many hotels allow you to check in at 2:30 (that's the bare minimum absolute fastest McCracken could have gotten to their Louisville hotel leaving at exactly 11:30 eastern and making the trip in 3 hours).

 

5) In the big scheme of things, this is small potatoes. I've seen basketball teams going to the Sweet 16 miss T-W-R-F and play at night both games in that span. And it's completely allowable and legal.

 

6) I'm not from McCracken, know no one there (other than the boys' soccer coach who came from Central Hardin) and don't even remember the last time I was in Paducah. I'm not supporting McCracken because I'm some big MC homer.

not sure why there's even a thread on this. It's STATE. Let's the kids enjoy the moment. One more day out of the classroom isn't going to really matter, especially when those young ladies are likely thinking about the game.

Since distances have been discussed in this thread I decided to google how far it is from my Owsley Counry home to Paducah, because I've never been farther west in Kentucky than Bowling Green and some time in the future i'd like to visit the far western part of the state.

Well, after googling I discovered there's not much difference in distance from my home town of Booneville to Paducah than it is driving to Atlanta, Ga. It's 340 miles and 5 1/2 hour drive. It's a LONG way from east to west in this state. And Pikeville is 2 hours east of where I live.
