I disagree somewhat. Minorities could hate Bush and it was accepted that they just dislike the president because of his policies. No one called them racist. If a white person hates Obama (because of any number of his policies) that person is not looked upon as disliking the policies first and foremost, but rather as being racist first and the policy disagreement as flowing from that.

For the record I do not hate Obama as a person. And while I disagree with a myriad of his policies, I can see the necessity in some of them. For years I have felt like the #1 problem in this country is that the last two generations have been raised with an "entitlement" philosophy, regardless of their income or wealth. I don't know how we get back to the work ethic and dreams that our great-great grandparents had (while at the same time improving race relations for the generation whose great-great grandparents did NOT have those opportunities). I don't think the left OR the right can do that.

I trust nothing Fox News puts out. If I want to watch unslanted news about American politics. I watch international news. The bbc is far more accurate and balanced than any American news source any more

I think the hatred seems worse with each administration because of the increasing access to the comments. Thirty years ago you had networks and newspapers which were still highly regulated. Twenty years ago you had a few cable and radio shows spewing hatred during prime hours. Ten years ago cable was in full force and the internet was in play. Now you have cable, radio, internet and social media all in play 24/7 giving access to anyone who wants to vent.

 

I dread to think about what's coming down the lane.

Bush was criticized as much as Obama but Obama is by far the most hated president I have ever seen in my life. Partly because of his politics and partly because of his skin color. No other president can say they have had that level of hate.

Here's a key difference between the "hatred" of Bush and Obama. You can find all sorts of nasty things said about either of them by fringe players, but the leading candidate for the GOP nomination and about 1/4 of the party doesn't even believe Obama is the legitimate president. And that's just one topic. How many in the mainstream think he's a Muslim and thus a terrorist sympathizer? I don't remember mainstream politicains, candidates, or commentators talking about Bush in those egregious terms.

Here is how I see the hatred issue. Yes, there is hatred by the opposition on Presidents, but it is usually political hatred. The big difference is it is personal with Obama, and I see race being one reason why it is much more personal. His skin color makes it easy for those who want to hate on him.

 

And please, no one is going to admit it is because he is black. Someone said earlier that they never heard anyone say they hate Obama because he is black. Come on. That is not going to happen unless you are with skinheads and the like. I have seen people who are Democrats to the core turn on Obama and there is little doubt in my mind that him being black is a big reason why. It isn't the only reason, but it is a big one.

 

As to whether the country was/is ready for a black president, I say it was. If it wasn't, he would not have been elected. If another black man comes along with the right message at the right time, he can get elected also.

 

Finally, some of the hate is not due to race. Some of it is due to the nature of our society. Today's media and social media have raised the hate level. Commentary that the vast majority would not have heard years ago happens daily today. There is no decorum among political adversaries. Headline hunting is pervasive. All this feeds into hate messages. It feeds into our elected officials who govern to headlines and the next election more than good policy. This has created a major wedge in compromise and diplomacy. All these things add to the hate and they are not due to Obama's race.

I have never seen more hatred for a sitting president. Regardless if you agree with his political stance he is still the US President and people should respect that. I have had some of my own friends say things along the lines of wishing he would die etc.. With social media the hatred for some one is perpetrated so much easier today. It also allows for allot more political propaganda to be spread at a rapid pace. Honestly I love my country but I'm truely embarrassed by some of the people in it.

 

Oh how soon we forget that guy who occupied the same seat just 8 short years ago. This President's "public hatred" doesn't approach what Bush got from the left, in my opinion.

With President Obama he's hated not for his politics, but for his skin color, a misguided belief that he's Muslim, which is due to his name and skin color, and an asinine belief that he's not even American. With President Obama it goes beyond politics, it's a hate based on prejudices.

Yeah because a black dude calling Bush white trash is the same as calling Obama the n word. Have you ever seen or heard a black person call Bush white trash or any derogatory name? Saltine synonym maybe? I can't say I have. Not saying it hasn't happened but none come to mind. Suppose I had seen 50 blacks call him the Saltine synonym I've still seen and heard Obama called the n word in 2015 way way more times that Bush has ever been racially insulted. And yes, for us black folks it stings a whole hell of a lot to see and hear a black president being called the n word. It would bother me the same to hear anyone call Dr. Carson the n word even though I think he is an idiot. And I'm sure there are plenty of people who "won't vote for that word either. "
