What Obama's 8 years in office have taught me

Featured Replies

No, my point is we would expect ideological disagreements, like with other Democrats. When it comes to Obama it's personal. He's not just a liberal, he's illegitimate, he's lazy, he's got some sort of deranged, scary ulterior motive he probably picked up in Kenya somewhere.

No doubt there are the far right who go there. The problem is that the Obama supporters want to project that to all people who oppose Obama. Therefore the many conservatives who strongly disagree with him on policy are labeled as racist and just opposing him because he's black.

That's why I said neither side was ready for a black president.

I can't think of anyone on this board who has equated criticizing or disagreeing with Obama with being a racist (outside of some conservative posters trying to be inflammatory). There might be dumb people out there that do that, but that's not my intention. My only point in threads on race is that I think race affects people's perceptions, mine included, because we are products of our culture. That doesn't make everyone a white supremacist. But it's something that should be discussed.

The only reason I quoted @doomer's post is 1) he's a very smart and reasonable poster and 2) what he said was curious to me in the light of PP92's post. Would we expect PP92's dad to be respected, where people might agree/disagree with him on the issues, or would we expect him to get labeled the same way Obama has been? That was no way an attack on doomer, but he provided an example of my point, which is that the criticism of Obama goes beyond "I don't agree with his stance on X issue" and into the territory of traits about him that make him prima facie unacceptable.

PCTC seems like an open minded organization  but they forgot to mention the $20 trillion tab he's leaving for your kids. Another fine "accomplishment".

Heck, I thought even the most die-hard hater could find SOMETHING in there.

Most of us don't trust him because he is/was inexperienced and a socialist. It had nothing to do with race. So are you telling me all blacks are inexperienced and socialist?

No. I am mainly saying that when I see things like "Obama has made race relations worse" or "The Great Divider" and when people get so bent out of shape about him saying Trayvon looked like his son if he had one. Anytime he does or says something that shows compassion to blacks people or Muslims and seems to ignore the plight of white people I always wonder what my father would do in those situations and I could see him doing or saying the same things. When you look at the things he has spoken on that involve race he has given the black perspective on it and he takes a beating for it. It reminds me of hurricane Katrina when Kanye West said George Bush don't care about black people. Why did he say that? Because Bush hadn't said or done anything about hurricane Katrina at that point. Does that mean Bush didn't care about black people? I don't know. I don't know what Bush was thinking. I do feel that if McCain or Romney had won instead of Obama that they wouldn't have spoken out on Trayvon or the had a Beer Summit or send a tweet to a Muslim kid telling him his clock is cool. The things Obama has said and done that apparently have divided the country are powerful things that black people will always remember. For 8 years there was a guy in the White House who shared the same thoughts as them and he wasn't afraid to speak and share those thoughts even though it came at a price. Ben Carson wouldn't say the things Obama has said in those racial issues.

I get that a lot of people don't agree with Obama's politics. No problem with that. His politics don't seem to be the implication behind him being labeled The Great Divider or having made race relations worse than ever before.

Hey PP, I bet Obama plays more golf than your dad ever did.

My dad plays some golf but he'd be on the tennis courts AT LEAST 3 times a week. :lol2:

Right on the nail with this one pp92. When Obama promoted My brother's keeper, the amount of racist garbage thrown his way and black people by conservatives was disgusting. I almost wanted to strangle people with some of their comments.

My problem with the Beer Summit is that he drank a Bud Lite.

@Habib, thanks for clarifying. In the last seven years, I can honestly say, in all the political discussions of which I have been a part, in many different venues, that I have never one time had the fact that Obama is black brought up as a reason not to like him. That doesn't mean I haven't seen various and sundry jokes or such, but I don't think that his race is the issue for all but a minority (no pun intended) of white people.

Dr Carson and President Obama are black in skin color but not black in politics. There's a difference. It's why Rupert Murdoch said yesterday that Dr Carson is a "real black President" candidate. He's as right wing as any of the R candidates which is comfortable to many on the right.

Like Republicans say a candidate like Sen McCain is a RINO I think many blacks believe Dr Carson is a BINO.

Dang, Rupert Murdoch said that for real?

Black is not just skin color/race, but political persuasion too?

That fits into this thread?

I guess, everyone is talking about Ben Carson and how racist people are and how racist people are against Obama and how no one is ready for a black president. Seems to fit in to me, if not please feel free to move it.
