I'm going to step in it now. I think the whole SENIOR NIGHT thing is way over blown. Yes, recognize your seniors and thank them for what they've done but the lengthy introductions of every one of them, their parents, their aunts, uncles, siblings, pets etc., their favorite memory, their wish for the future ans so on is ridiculous.

 

My favorite is when everybody gets introduced with some cutesy nickname that only the team members know, and the rest of the crowd is left scratching their head over who the hell the PA guy is referring to. This happens not just at Sr. Night, though.

Sure it's tedious to sit through but I've always figured it's the least I can do thank these young men who have put in countless hours of work and who have provided me so much entertainment.

My sons played at a very successful school where there would be 30+ seniors on the team. The head coach switched the senior night to the first home game instead of the last because it was a much more pleasant handshake with the parents of the players who didn't get enough playing time.

As was mentioned, the announcer that does play by play, but in addition does the cliche when several guys from a team are involved in a tackle says "tackled by a whole flock of Eagles", or a "pride of lions", etc.

 

Parents that complain about play calling nonstop grinds my gears too.

I've seen several senior nights that are at halftime.

 

AND they include cheerleaders, managers, stat girls, cross country, golf, marching band, etc.

 

Volleyball and soccer do their own nights (thank Gawd), but cross country and golf get lumped in (since they don't/can't have their own nights) and marching band/cheerleading gets thrown in with football (since they're at the games).

 

Have one of these take place at halftime in the cold of a game that you're at and you'll come over to the dark side, young Skywalker.

Unless the ceremony runs too long, and the home team gets a flag for not starting the game on time. This happened earlier this season at a Nelson Co. HS game when they were inducting their first HOF class at the school. I looked at the itinerary and it said they were starting the ceremony at 7:10. I knew there was no way they were getting all that done in time for KO.

You get mad because a parent wants to watch their child perform?

 

Not at that, I have had the same seats near the 50 yard line for a long time and have had a few try to weasel in at the half and request we get out of their way.

And on the other hand, it's nice for the senior that had limited playing time to get a little recognition for being committed and and there for the varsity to practice and get better with. My son had a coach in pee wee that was very good at that. He consistently praised the 2nd string for getting in there and working hard and helping win as a team.

I do remember a certain team in NKY that, after 20 years, moved the home sidelines away from the stands' side of the field. I always assumed it was due to the fact they wanted to get away from these "comments they could not hear."

By play by play are you referring to QB runs for 10 tackled by LB? Or QB gets snap fakes run fakes pass runs etc?

 

Don't mind the first one, some people keep track also gives recognition to whoever makes the play.

I don't mind SOME play-by-play by the P.A. Especially when it comes to tackles, fumble recoveries, etc.

 

The "flock of Eagles" and "pack of Lions" I can do without, but knowing the play was an option pitch right isn't hurting anyone. And sometimes the P.A. figures out there is a new quarterback before fans/the press box does.
