The CJ Editorial Board Responds To KHSAA's Action

Featured Replies

My issue lies with where the East/West line is drawn. How can half of Louisville be in the East part of the state and the other half in the West?
Because no matter where you draw the line geographically, it goes through Jefferson County.

Are half of the 4A schools in Kentucky west of Louisville and the other half East of Louisville?
By my count, there are 18 schools in 4A to the south and west of Louisville, 22 to the east. There are 14 in Jefferson County.

Just draw and line somewhere, but don't draw the line to conveniently match up two Louisville programs in the finals.
Our contention is that the line isn't drawn arbitrarily ... it just works out that way, much to many people's chagrin.

I was going to say this issue has been discuss several times. Doesn't Louisville have almost as many 4A schools as the rest of the state? I'll see if I can find the thread and attach.

The thing that really throws it off is the number of WKY schools compared to EKY. As has been pointed out, the split was done for travel reasons, so that's just how it worked. The other option is sending an EKY/CKY/NKY team to WKY to complete the Region...

I agree it has to be somewhere and it just split the Louisville schools up. I know people complain that T & X are close but would it have been better if X, T, Male, Manuel, all been in the same district and region? I don't know? How ever you put these big schools there is someone going to have to play two or three of these teams every year.

I'm not too sure about the CF. Supers have long complained about always having to beat Beechwood every year to advance to the finals and now complain about having to beat Beechwood AND NewCath. I've heard complaints about always having to beat CovCath and Highlands to make it to the AAA finals. They complain about having to always play Belfry or Mayfield each year to advance. So the desire to mix up the brackets stems from complaints from supers, principals and coaches in all classes who have gotten tired of getting knocked out of the playoffs by the same teams each year. I'm sure some will wonder if that has been the case, why the change this year. Perhaps there is some resentment against X and T behind the move (I'm not totally clueless:banana: ), but the desire to mix up the brackets got support from all levels. If the desire was just to have X and T eliminate one another before the state game, the KHSAA "could" have put X and T in the same district and not come up with the rotating brackets method. In fact putting them in the same district would have permanently prevented them from both making the state game. By using the rotating brackets, it will only prevent it from happening when their brackets match up.

I'm all for a mix up of the brackets, but it didn't go far enough (Yes, I know the reason given was travel expense). Region 1 A teams will still have to beat Mayfield to advance. Region 4 2A teams will still have to beat Belfry to advance. In fact districts 1,2,7, and 8 will still have to get by the traditional powers. If they were complaining, how does the new system help them? Only in in districts 3 - 6 is there a draw. It seems to many (not that many thinking a thing makes it correct) that the new system was put into place so that T and X could and would draw each other before the finals.

If they are truly the two "best teams" they should be playing, at some point, no matter how the playoff system is set up. Does it matter if it's in the championship game or not? In the end, you still have to beat the other team. If you happen to fall on the other side of the bracket, then maybe they'll meet in the finals.

I have no problem with that. (Having CovCath and Highlands stuck in the same district for the 1990s was no picnic for either team). What concerns me is instead of coming out and saying we are switching things so that X and T can meet before the finals, we hear how a mix up of teams (well for half the districts anyway) before the finals is beneficial. And it does matter if X/T play before the finals in the sense that a non Louisville team will be able claim the runner up trophy.

When will people stop with the tired old refrain of "We should have the 2 best teams in the finals"

Whenever you set up a playoff bracket designed soley on geographic districts/regions the odds are AGAINST having the 2 best teams in the finals EVER !

Who out there STILL does not understand this very SIMPLE concept?

.....CJ writers ?? ...........Athletic Directors?? .......anyone??

PLEASE stop with this mantra of a 6 year old mentality !

And the CJ editorial - further evidence of weak investigative and reporting skills, not to mention supporting the egocentric 4A mentality, and of course by default Lou. itself.

"But the KHSAA board of control's decision(s) .... to use a draw for pairings in the remainder of the playoffs will spread joy among those who resent seeing St. Xavier, Trinity and/or Male in the 4-A championship every year."

Go on ....., and ...... ???

I guess the 3 other classes and hundreds of schools dont factor into the KHSAA actions at all - huh?

And when any of us suggests a Louisville center-of-the-world mentality we are knocked as attacking Louisville??? OK if you say so.

We think too much alike, I'm saying the same things in another thread...:thumb:

Get out a map and check it out for yourself. Louisville ends up as the split point. ..

It doesn't matter to me so much that I will actually put the time into plotting a map. T and X can meet every year in the finals and it has no bearing on my life. I am just stating that I find it hard to believe that there can be a line through Louisville that divides East/West.

I hear what you are saying, although claiming the runner up trophy to me is like a person kissing his sister. Thanks but no thanks. We keep track of state championships, not runner up appearances. I know people want to the KHSAA to admit that the whole change was to pit X vs T before the finals, and again, while I was born at night, it wasn't last night, so I can't argue that such probably did not enter into anyone's minds. And even if it did, I would hope that most supporters of the private schools think that it beats separating the playoffs between the publics and privates and make no bones about it, the supporters of Proposal 20 HAVE NOT given up and are lobbying the State Board of Education to support Proposal 20. With I think 7 new members on the State Board, the suppporters feel they have a fresh shot. But in any event, I don't think it was the entire reason as stated in a prior post.

It would have been easy if the KHSAA did a complete draw with every district involved so all this conspiracy and integrity trash could have been avoided. However if they had done so, the uproar about the long travel for some teams would have been deafening, and we'd be reading posts about how stupid the KHSAA was do to so. I think Tackett made a wise choice in trying to do as much rotation as possible without the cross state travel. And there will always be people unhappy no matter what method is chosen. If you do nothing people are unhappy. If you do something other people are unhappy. And that problem is not unique to Ky. Man you should hear the hue and cry from the Cincinnati folks about the state championship football games again being held in the Northeast part of the state. To them the OSHAA officials are the dumbest people on the face of this earth.

If travel was of the utmost concern, wouldn't the KHSAA would have kept the quarterfinals (1 vs. 2, 3 vs. 4, etc.) exactly as they are now?

Keep in mind that at that level of the playoffs you only have a few teams potentially traveling in each class as opposed to what is it - 32 teams per class in the opening round (I didnt take time to count - but you get my drift)

BIG difference

True, but if travel truly was the utmost concern, they would have kept it the same.

Doesn't the KHSAA pay the travel expenses for the schools during the playoffs? If they do, then the gate lost by not having T/X in the championship will be gained using this new early playoff system in saved travel expenses they would have had to pay these schools.

Uh... 32 teams don't travel in the first round.
Woody, I feel were it not for Trinity's and X's success, there would have been no change to the playoff format made. Conspiracy or not, it is convenient for teams with state championship aspirations that the Louisville districts with X and Trinity can now meet before the finals. And that is what happened.

I agree 100%
