Went up 33-10. Fell asleep at the wheel. Towles didn't play well and the defense started giving up big runs.

 

Defense held two or three possessions at the end though and to drove down and scored when it mattered.

 

When the kicker missed a FG and EP, at the time they didn't seem like a big deal because Kentucky was dominating. When ULL came back those missed 4 points hurt.

I think uk should get all three running backs more involved.

Kentucky is getting better talent wise. That being said there were major problems tonight.

 

For starters we did not run the football. We hit on numerous long pass plays in the first half and everyone was happy. But in the 2nd half we were not hitting those passes and we fell behind on the sticks far to often. If you can not run the football and have success against ULL then you will not win in the SEC. We did run it on the last drive but if we would have ran it in the third and ate up some clock we may have not had to fight for our lives.

 

Second, the open field tackling by the secondary is awful. I am not sure we could have tackled #25 in a phone booth. To many times we came in and dove at his legs. He was a scat back and we would not hit and grab cloth.

 

Finally Towles. I love the character of the kid and hope he can be the QB the Cats need, but it seems like when faced with adversity he struggles. When momentum is on his side LOOK OUT. But when one or two things go wrong he presses to hard and his decision making and ball placement become big issues. In my view he is the QB for now, but 3 straight series vs USC like the second half tonight and Stoops better be looking at other options because I don't think we can be bowl eligible if we sit at 1-2 after the first three games.

On a side note the atmosphere before the game was the best I have ever experienced for opening day at Commonwealth.

I couldn't agree more about Boom, but I think Jojo Kemp is the odd man out. He is to slow IMO. He sees the alleys he just can't accelerate through them. I would give his carries to Boom and Horton and let King get more involved. Play Jojo like a FB and use him in some waggles.

Towles had 257 yards 3 tds not bad at all.

I was there and seeing all the people leaving in the 3rd quarter and even leaving after we pulled ahead by 16 really irked me. About 3/4 of the students left at halftime. New stadium but same fans. Guy sitting beside me was playing on his phone all night and even complained I was standing up too much when he never got up to cheer once. Need to keep winning to have a complete culture change. I'll take a win any way I could get it right now.

I think I can give PT a pass on the first game of the year, he got in a groove in the 1st half and tore it up. But after half time he was off. If he struggles next game I'd say get Barker in there. But I think he deserves another game for there truly to be a QB controversy.

No defense, QB was very inaccurate, place kicker bad, imo need to run the ball more, no defense, did I mention no defense ?

MVP for U.K. = CWS ! The renovations looked awesome, was great to see a capacity crowd, hopefully after this showing they won't stay away.

How does that ancient Chinese proverb go? He who gives up 479 yards to Sun Belt team really struggle in SEC...

Towles missed easy throws. I'm sure not many want to throw him under the bus and I get that. But he missed easy throws. And the defense is porous, so that's a terrific combo. And their giant leg kicker was below the line too. Glad it was first game.

 

But let's give ULL some credit, they're not your average patsy. I was impressed with their personnel.

Hearing and reading about the game it makes me worry about UK's QB position. All we heard all off season was how close Towles and Barker were.

 

A couple things come to mind. If Towels struggled then why didn't they give Drew a shot?

The other thing that came to mind was if the two are that close then maybe that was saying both aren't ready to be QB's in the Sec and the confidence isn't there yet to turn the reigns over to Drew. I hope it's not the latter because Towles clearly Isn't the answer after the second half of last season and yesterday.

A friend opined that UK of the past 2 years would have lost to this ULL team. I think I agree with him. And I guess that means we've improved a bit.
