For those asking why no Barker and saying Stoops promised we would see both....

 

The way I read into that was that we may see Barker if the game was out of hand late, say garbage time work. Not necessarily that there was going to be a set in stone time share at the QB position.

 

Stoops announced Patty Ice as the starter not that they were doing a QB by committee. For those confused and saying you thought we'd see Barker I believe the thinking was if the game played out a certain way he may get some garbage time. If Patty keeps playing the way he did last night it may be garbage time.

When you are NOT named the starting QB nothing is guaranteed in regards to playing time. Pat is the starter and is going to get the minutes.

 

With that said, the above is incorrect. Stoops and Dawson were both quoted about their desire to get Drew in early in crunch time minutes vs mop up duty. Those same comments were made in the spring. Didn't happen.

 

Great lesson to learn - what MIGHT happen and what HOPES to happen do not always happen once the game starts.

 

Drew's job is to a)be ready to go in when called and b)be patient. From talking to him he's doing well at both.

So UL should fire their whole coaching staff? Lafayette should fire their coaching staff? Both teams lost yesterday but both team's offense improved dramatically when they stuck their backup QBs in the game.

Well, I'd say that if it took exactly 1 half of a football game for these coaching staffs to realize that the work they had put in evaluating their players over the course of the past 8-9 months produced the wrong result (ie, they picked the wrong guy), then I would have real concerns about the quality of the staffs in evaluating their players. They made a change after seeing 30 minutes of football action...

Everyone is different. I'd rather have a staff that will do whatever it takes to win the game. Some folks are practice players or 3pm All Americans is what I like to call them while others are horrible practice players and 7:30pm All Americans. It takes trial and error for even the greatest staffs to figure out who is who.

I missed some of the game, but looking at Towles stat line, and then looking at the defensive stat line, it doesn't look like the QB is the problem. He threw 3 TD's, 1 INT. His completion percentage is a little lower than you like, but I really don't think that he is the problem

Are you insinuating that any coach that has ever made a lineup change in the opening game of the season isn't fit to coach? Are you serious?

Agreed. 40 points should be enough to comfortably win most football games.

He also missed a lot of throws that a QB has to make. They scored 40 points but there were definitely points left on the field due to QB mistakes. That being said...they scored 40 points.

I was certainly unimpressed with my wildcat's overall performance in this one. I've been hearing all summer that the defense has more depth and is improved over last year, it didn't look that way to me. Sure they wereissing three key players, but isn't that where more depth is supposed to help?

 

On offense I was impressed with the recievers. They constantly beat their man and got open. Towles made some good passes and some bad passes, the game being close isn't on him though, that lands solely on the defense. He needs to be more consistent, but I'm not ready to throw him under the bus just yet. I would like to see more of a running game to help take some of the pressure off of Towles.

 

It wasn't the start I expected and they clearly have to get better if they want to go bowling. But a win is a win and I'll take it. We should know more about where they stand in the next few weeks.

I think that if you watch the whole game then you will understand that Towles was terribly inconsistent. He put his defense in a bind a lot in the second half, IMO.

Here is a question for those suggesting a QB change is in order... if the UK coaching staff had the entire offseason/summer to evaluate the QB situation and decided to go with Towles, then why would any reasonable person think that the back-up will produce better results than the starter? If Towles is benched and the back up comes in and ends up playing demonstrably better, then the entire UK coaching staff should probably be fired for gross incompetence in evaluating the most important position in all of American sports (the QB position).

Then what the heck is Urban still doing in Columbus?

He didn't bench QBs, his first and second string QBs got injured.

UKs offense is better than ever. But they need to work on that defense. Highlands almost lost to Bryan Station 47-41 (a decent team but nothing campared to top tier teams.) But Highlands turned out to be a lightning powerhouse team and won state. My point is that if a team is caught off guard, it doesn't mean they won't be force to be reckoned with. UK got cocky and gave up points because of it.

For the first time in a while, I thought the WR corp looked real good.

 

They consistently beat coverage and got open. Unfortunately There were seversl terribly under thrown balls that they battled for and made catches. If Towles makes a good throw several go for touchdowns.

 

Last year those catches probably fall to the ground, and the Cats lose.

 

This group made Towles look better than he played.
