Let's assume that the U.S. forms a committee to study and make recommendations for lawmakers to work out the gun issue.

1) On this committee there will be no one who strongly opposed guns or advocated taking away guns. Not would there be anyone from the gun industry or lobbiest. That the committee will be composed of those people in the middle. Would this be a start?

Let's assume that this committee looks at reforming health care and drug care, make HIPPA assessable for background checks, that every single gun sale will require a federal background check. There will be new rules concerning when firearms should be taken away from someone, example being if someone is depressed about a death, loss of job, home or spouse or such. That it will be worked out that no one will have thier firearms taken away unless they are a real threat. And that types of firearms and capacity will not be touched.

Would this be ok?

Wait. Who isn't depressed with the death of a loved one? If you lose your job you lose your gun? What about home or spouse or such exactly? I think we need to know exact details here.
Weren't there a fair number of police department gun buyback programs about 20-25 years ago? Whatever happened to those?

Several studies showed they didn't really achieve a reduction in gun violence, some of the studies were done by groups sensitive to gun control came up with similar results. After that police abandoned them to a large degree, the police chief in Louisville in the early or mid 90's cited such studies in his recommendation to end the buy backs and revert those funds to other police needs. Unfortunately not many people you don't want to own guns turned them in, mostly people you don't mind owning a gun.

Kinda like the fearmongering drumbeat of the cons. "They're gonna take our guns. Write it down."

A serious question for my conservative BGP brethren. Let's pick an arbitrary date. January 20, 2009.

How many of your guns have been confiscated since then?

Which is why second amendment believers are so against gun registration. In numerous cases, registration was simply step one to confiscation. Canada, New Zealand and England are three examples I can think of where this occurred. So long as we keep fighting to prevent registration, confiscation is all but impossible. One state (Connecticut? Rhode Island?), tried to confiscate without registration and compliance to the law mandating people to turn in certain types of scary firearms was gloriously low. It was a beautiful instance of public disobedience to an unjust law.

Why do you blindly trust other Americans so much?

I trust my safety to the average Joe Citizen I would encounter in public ten times more than I trust a politician with my rights.

No other developed country has a gun homicide or gun violence rate even approaching that level. (That’s true even though the rate is now much lower than it was in the early 1990s, likely because crime overall has declined.) And while America’s high rate of gun violence undoubtedly reflects many factors, researchers like David Hemenway, a widely cited professor from the Harvard School of Public Health, have found a clear, strong relationship between gun ownership and gun-related deaths. In places where more people have guns, more people get killed by them.

We're number one!

Extract the poor, mostly minority zip codes - and we are not. The sad fact, or fortunate fact depending on where you live, is that most 'gun violence' is highly concentrated and is minority on minority. The vast majority of the US is no more 'violent' that other countries.

So get rid of the minorities and poor and America is a safe place free of overwhelming gun violence? :ohbrother:

My rifle has history of 4 deaths. 2 Bucks and 2 doe. My shotgun, too many squirrel to count. Guess I don't deserve to have my guns either because of their history. Guess I'll just rely on my bow, or should those be taken too?

So get rid of the minorities and poor and America is a safe place free of overwhelming gun violence? :ohbrother:

I think that there are many who would like to get on board with that. Heck, I meet with several of them every Wednesday evening.

So get rid of the minorities and poor and America is a safe place free of overwhelming gun violence? :ohbrother:

Bluegrasscard simply states a known fact and you stretch it into that???

OK.

So get rid of the minorities and poor and America is a safe place free of overwhelming gun violence? :ohbrother:

As some point out, somewhat accurately, there are multiple America's. One has to look no further than Chicago for that evidence.

If you live in the Chatham area of Chicago you live in one 'America'. Select the link below and scroll down on the right to see that.

If you live in Mount Greenwood, Edison Park, Forest Glen and North Park you live in another 'America'.

The point is that this particular subject is one that is overly generalized. The US is far less one society than most counties. It is really a statement of failure that the 'gun violence' is so concentrated in pockets of the American society. Most American's are not concerned with addressing the root problems in these areas that lead to the violence. Sadly, they have mostly been written off by the broader society and left to their own. Such is the case for certain areas of Chicago, or as recently shown almost the entire city of Baltimore. That was the point.

Yeah right, because that's what he said.

I didn't stretch it just filled in the gaps. I certainly apologize if one of you guys were going to explain how lift up the poor.

BC, I will agree with you that these communities have a myriad of issues and our country seems to turn a blind eye which creates problems of poverty and violence.

Gotta pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

A rising tide lifts all boats.

The point is where most of the gun crime comes from, yet you and a few others want to blame the gun and all gun owners. That is one of the biggest issues we on the pro gun side have with the anti gun side.
