Could Mercer/Harrodsburg Consolidated be forced to play 3A in 2006?

Featured Replies

The best part of this, is we are talking about Mercer football in May. After winning only 1 playoff game in 17-18 years, this sure is a refreshing change.
Probably not for the reason some would prefer.

After playing Lex Catholic and Boyle Co. in district play, for several years, I do not think anyone at Mercer is going to feel bad about be one of the largest 2A schools in the state.
Just going by what I read here, that seems pretty obvious.

Why did they take Mercer's schedule and play in 2A? Why didn't they take Harrodsburgs and play in 1A?

It is only one year and would the disparity be that much worse than the disparity in 4A.

If we are going to check our brains at the door and throw logic out the window lets just go all the way. :D

If I was the KHSAA, I would mandate that if the students are housed in separate buildings, the schools must field separate teams.

In all honesty I guess they didn't take Harrodsburg's schedule because that was the one that was eaten by Mercer. Harrodsburg ceases to exist with this graduating class and so all is now simply Mercer County.

(I know you knew the answer OldBird but I just thought I'd give the nice response that others might not. :thumb: )

Because H merged into M, with M being the surviving entity and not the other way around.

They didn't do it at Letcher Central. Why should Mercer be any different? There is a precedent set on this one.

Mercer's updated schedule for 2006 season is no cake walk -

Lexington Christian Academy at Lexington Catholic

South Laurel at Fort Harrod Bowl

Casey County

Garrard County

Boyle County (I think)

Then the rest of the season are the district games.

These boys playing in 2A this season are definitely not going to be able to just breeze through to a state title. They are going to have their hands full the whole entire season! Right now, the boys I have spoken too have really good attitudes and are ready to get started.

When did Letcher have one team and separate schools?

If it was this past year, there is a difference ... Letcher competed in the class commensurate with its combined enrollment. Mercer won't be.

Your exact quote that I responded to was this:

If I was the KHSAA, I would mandate that if the students are housed in separate buildings, the schools must field separate teams.

The building at LCC was not finished this past year, so the kids were in different buildings/schools but all sports competed as one school. Yes they did compete in the class commensurate with its combined enrollment as this had been planned for quite some time but the construction of what apparently is a top notch facility(s), was not completed and left them with no choice. However, my point was that there existed a precedent from this past season whereas separate schools played together on one team.

Let's be honest about this, ... if Mercer/Harrodsburg were really trying to pull off a fast one here, why didn't they just keep Harrodsburg's schedule and play in 1A instead of 2A? This is a 1 year situation which will be resolved after the 2006 season.

But Letcher's situation is different than the one at Mercer. Letcher's plan to consolidate had been public for some time. Other schools had time to adjust their schedules. From a football standpoint, Letcher was competing in the class appropriate for its combined enrollment.

None of those situations exist in this case.

Because Mercer absorbed Harrodsburg, not the other way around. Even if the school system had tried to do that, I suspect the KHSAA would have made them stay with Mercer's 2A schedule.

I agree there are differences and the KHSAA would have probably made them play the 2A schedule. It would make more sense. Just answering the post dude! :thumb:

Now granted, Boyle and South Laruel will be tough games, but come on... Casey and Garrard Co. Though some won't like this, they aren't what I would call tough competition. I don't think people gage their success by how well they play against teams like that. Now Boyle Co. on the other hand... well now that is a step in the right direction for the Mercer program. When Mercer competes with the likes of Boyle Co. year and year out... even winning a few of 'em... then you'll know they've taken their game to a whole new level. I wish the best for Mercerburg and those kids!!! They have an opportunity not too many get to take advantage of. Go 'hogdogs'!!!:dancingpa

I thought all the Letcher Central students were together at Whitesburg. Did they use the old Fleming-Neon and Letcher buildings in 2005-06?

1) Mercer will be in class 2A for the upcoming season.

2) The only thing merging this year are the high school athletics and the boards of education. As far as the student population goes, both sets of students will remain on their respective school campuses until Mercer's new high school is built. At that time, they will begin merging students together.

3) Middle school sports will remain separate. Harrodsburg will still field their own team and so will Mercer. They just will not compete against one another this season.

This is misleading. They will only be one school according to KDE, even though classes will be in more than one building. That's a big difference than people believing that they are two schools with a "combined" athletic program.
