Could Mercer/Harrodsburg Consolidated be forced to play 3A in 2006?

Featured Replies

We all know that, which is why I thought the exception I listed in the first post was very interesting. If I read it right, it is totally up to the KHSAA's discretion to place them into 3A if they view this as a "new program" and in that instance it wouldn't matter if it is a re-districting year or not.

As Mountain Thunder stated, there is no malice in my question. I wish Mercer/Harrodsburg the best whichever class they are playing in.

My interest in this is more of the curious nature. To my knowledge this is unchartered waters and I find it a very interesting topic. Add in the fact that they are merging athletic teams at least a year prior to the physical merger and it makes it more interesting. Consider that it is in between redistricting and it adds even more interest.

No matter who you support, I don't see how you could not be interested in this case and how the KHSAA will handle it.

Please let's not make this thread into a Mercer vs Everybody Else thread. That is not what it was intended to be.

Letcher Central did this (having students on the same athletic teams before the school was completed). However, the school did open during the school year and all the kids were moved if I understand that situation better. I just think the construction was a little bit behind. (I hear it is a remarkable facility from top to bottom, first class all the way). And they were merging 3 schools. However, the plans were laid for over a year before and the preparations made then. This short of a notice makes it more difficult on how to handle this situation.

Right you are, MT, thanks for bringing up Letcher Central. Of course, they merged, took on a new name, new school, played 3A, and were regarded a new program.

I wonder if they had kept the name Whitesburg High if they could have remained 2A until the next redistricting? Maybe it is all in a name. :D

I still want to see their facilities first hand. I hear they are awesome!

With this merge, there is not a new school building or new name for this coming season. They (or we, I should say) are in the same buildings and will be Mercer County High School. They only thing changing is the mascot. Colors will be red, blue, and white. This is not a new school system. The only thing that has happened is that Mercer County School System has absorbed the Harrodsburg School System via merge.

It sounds like it will not be a new school perse'. I look forward to seeing them. With Jaggers at the helm, he could really build a program getting all the best athletes in Mercer County.

Buffalo Gap, what happens next year? In other words, will all of H'burg students attend at the current Mercer Co building? Or will they use a combination of the two or build a new school or what?

It's my understanding that some of the kids will be in both school building throughout the day, depending on certain classes that they may take. :thumb:

Please let's not make this thread into a Mercer vs Everybody Else thread. That is not what it was intended to be. I was interested in the KHSAA's role in this and whether they have any decision making to do in terms of which class Mercer/Harrodsburg will be in. I hope we can focus on that topic and deal with the other issues in their own thread.

I think it is actually a great question. BUT there is a precedent. The 1975 AA champions were the consolidation of Scott County and Georgetown. But that final action happened AFTER alignments were adopted (as I remember) and schedules were made. So they were a AAA enrollment school playing AA. Next chance for realignment, they were moved.

I suspect the same thing is happening here. They will no doubt move up with the final product.

I did not know that. Great information! Thanks kissinger! I learn something new every day.

Just curious, when was the rule written that Watusi referred to? Was this before or after the 75 season? I suspect you can point that out Kissenger. If the rule was reworded or written after the 75 season then would that still be precedent? :sssh: I am just curious as this is an interesting debate that has intrigued me. Good luck to those boys either way.

It would mess with too many schedules on very short notice. I don't see this happening.

The merger has already messed up a lot of schedules for a bunch of schools ! There are a lot of programs looking to fill a spot on their schedule because of this decision.

Since we have heard the words "level playing field" every day for the past 6 months....

Is there any playing field any more unlevel than for the AA schools that have to play Mercer?

It has messed up a bunch of schedules. Moving them to 3A right now would make it even worse. The KHSAA has to decide very soon.

If this is going to keep on getting brough up, then, sure, there is more of an "unlevel" playing field in 4A moreso than anything. Check out the KHSAA site, Dunbar(2200) being the highest enrollment in 4A and Lincoln Co.(1200)...now, if you want to look at "unlevel", thats unlevel, a difference in a 1000 students, playing in the same class...Mercer would only have a 300+ advantage, if that, over the smallest 2A schools.

With the new merger, Mercer's enrollment will be somewhere between 900-950, depending on the exact number of kids that H'burg will be bringing (the KHSAA site says it's 226, but Ive heard, from very reliable sources, that it's actually about 190)..so, give or take, somewhere between 900-950...

..but, according to those numbers, L'ville Western (904) and Lone Oak(840) are the next biggest in 2A...that's just the way things happen to be sometimes, and in this case, sometime being, one year.

This merger has been discussed for years.

Mercer is a rapidly growing school system. Because of that, they had an opportunity to get a substantial grant to build a new high school. The new high school has been in the planning stage for close to two years, with construction to start soon. The total construction of all facilities was to take several years and be done in multiple phases. By merging now, there is an increased amount of money available. The new school and facilities are supposed to be completed in one phase. Most anyone would take advantage of this opportunity, it is in the best interest of the students and the school system to do it immediately. That is why this happened so quickly.

I don't think the people involved in this were at all concerned about wether it would give Mercer a percieved unfair advantage in AA football for one year. It was simply the right thing to do for all of the right reasons

If staying in 2A this year which I think will happen........

It appears as though the new blind draw has Newport & Mercerburg "avoiding" Russell in that early matchup now. Please correct me if Im reading it wrong?
