Coach Cov back at T! :ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper:

^Not a good fit in Indiana. Great fit at Trinity.

BTW - no one said he is going to destroy Male. They are not on the schedule.

OK, so I missed the word "designed" as in designed to destroy Male. But humor me, and allow me to play Devil's advocate. You say not a good fit in Indiana, but great fit at Trinity. But really wouldn't anybody be. What's the difference. Both schools have a great tradition when it comes to football, obviously Trinity is on another level, but it not like he had to try to re-invent the wheel at Castle.

I like using stats to support an arguement, so I'll throw in some more. I'm just not really sure that Coach Coverdale makes any difference, the Rocks didn't miss a beat since he left. During his three year absence they were 34-8 with 2 State Championships, and averaged 37.6 pts. per game. The previous 5 seasons (I'm not sure when Coach Coverdale arrived) they were 61-10 with 2 State Championships and averaged 38.6 pts. per game.

So I guess you could argue that Trinity is 1 pt. per game better with Coach Coverdale as OC. But couldn't is also be argued that Trinity would have similar success with just about any decent OC.

The bottom line to me is that Trinity would continue to win more than their fair share of state championships with or without Coach Coverdale as the OC. In my opinion his resume has lost some of its luster during his stint at Castle. He was unsuccessful at a school where success has traditionally occurred fairly often. I guess he could redeem himself by winning some more titles at Trinity, but then its likely that they might have won them anyway.

While T's overall success in football speaks is a given....

It is my understanding that part of T's recent success was due to Coach Cov and his first time around at Trinity!

You have a legit argument that Trinity is going to win a lot no matter who is there. For those coaches that know Coach Coverdale they will tell you that he is one of the most detailed and most innovative coaches out there. He is always on top of new trends in offenses and I'll go on record saying that I have never been around another coach that is more organized and detail oriented than Coach Coverdale. I've been to conventions in Cincy, Louisville, UK, Chicago, Dallas, Minn etc and he is the most organized/detailed Coach I have ever witnessed. When I was reall young he didn't blink to respond to any email I ever sent either. I really tried to pick his brain a lot and I was Joe Shmoe little guy learning the game. He treated me like I has Joe Pa. He is first class!

As for the Castle argument once again you have a legit argument. It's been a long time since I've seen him but it seemed like they were pretty smash mouth which is not his forte. He runs a lot of zone/jet stuff and throws the ball all over the place with a great screen package too. I think his style just fit with the kids you get at Trinity (McBroom's etc) as opposed to the smashmouth kids he had there. Let's be honest that talent makes any coach look good. Brohm and company were special! I think he will do a great job there and his scheme with Trinity's talent is a perfect fit. I don't think it was a perfect fit at Castle. I know I would take my chances any day of the week with him as my coach!

Maybe, just maybe that Castle had always been a smashmouth type of team and they didn't buy into Coach Coverdale's system.

It takes total dedication from everyone from the players to the other coaches on the staff. My question is were the people at Castle willing to do what it took to excel in the wide open system or were they to busy piming for the smash mouth days of old?

Their loss is Trinity's gain.

Thanks for your response. I'm honestly not trying to discredit Coach Coverdale, I just found it strange that the overwhelming postive response about him on BGP just wasn't consistent with what he accomplished while at Castle.

Our local news channels are all based in Indiana, and Kentucky High School Football is an afterthougt since they have obviously more important Hoosier high schools to cover, so I do follow Castle somewhat by default waiting for them to get to the KY games.

Based on what he acheived at THS, I really thought his hire was a great choice and that he would be able to take Castle from being a team that was successful in the 5A sectional and regionals, to a team that was competitive year in and year out at the semi-state and state.

Obviously something went wrong, and I am in the minority on BGP, but having never seen Trinity play, I can only judge him as a HC since I've seen a few Castle games while he was at the helm.

Bottom line on coach Cov at Castle - and this comes from both sides of the fence - is that it was just never a good fit.

When he was hired the longtime coach prior to coach Cov.....who liked to run, run, run....came out in the papers basically throwing down on the thought of putting in a wide-open scheme at Castle.

Maybe the coach was right I don't know. All I know is he never really had the type of kids he needed to run the offense - and you don't need a Brohm.

Anyway, I think it's a win-win for both sides. I know some folks at Castle are elated to see him go and there are many at Trinity that are jumping for joy to have him back in the box.

He is an offensive genius. I just remember him with that kid before Brohm at QB - someone help me with a name....Riddle?? - and he threw for like 2,500 yards. The kid didn't have that kind of tools but was put in the right schemes...............

Coverdale walked into a tough situation at Castle. The previous coach (a smashmouth football guy) was upset that one of his former assistants didn't get the job and let it be known. He was well-liked there, but it's my understanding that Coverdale's system never meshed with the kids at Castle, for whatever reason.

We've seen at the college ranks (especially basketball) lately how tough it is to replace a legend. Was that part of the problem? John Lidy had been the head coach since 1973, winning over 65% of his games, and 2 State Championships.

"LEGEND"? Two titles in thirty years and losing a third of his games? 65% equals a lot of 6-4 and 7-3 seasons doesn't it? Around St. Matthews that wouldn't qualify as a "legend", that would qualify as "fired".

I don't know or care about why Coach Cov is back, I'm just glad he is back. :dancingpa

I'm sure glad that I have a season ticket. It's going to be fun to watch. I bet Nick's smiling.

Coverdale couldn't get it done at Castle because he didn't have a QB to run his offense. The best QB he had in his 3 years was his first year and then the kids were struggling to learn his offense. His second year he had to move away from alot of what he liked to do. He had a stud power runner in Brandon Charrolton(sp?) and zero QB. Although Charrolton was one of the best RB in the area Caslte's overall talent was not up to par with the other 5A schools in the area. On top of that their main rival, Ritz, just so happened to be having one of their best runs in the past couple of years (their head coach is the coach of the Evansville Blue Cats). Overall Coverdale walked into a bad situation. Although Lidy's record may not be up to par with the coaches of St. Matthews he was considered a legend by many old schoolers from Newburgh. It was kid of like IU fans and Bobby Knight. To some he could do no right but to others he is a football god. His style of play was line up 2 tight and run down your throat.

The bottom line is that ANY head football coach must be a good fit for a particular school. Knute Rockne himself could have went into some situations and not have been a good fit. I have heard many successful head coaches state that they would never follow a longtime and very successful coach. Programs that are the most open to change are those that need to rebuilt or are struggling. There were probably many folks linked to the Castle program that felt if "it ain't broke don't fix it". Regardless, its a done deal and its best for all involved to move onward and upward.

Coach Coverdale is a phenominal person and football man. If I were a betting man, I would put a pretty hefty sum down that Coach Coverdale's prefix will change from "Asst" to "Head" before he leaves St. Matthews this time.

Congrats to Coach and the Trinity folks!!
