I once told me best friend, who is a very conservative history teacher and was going to listen to him speak, that I laugh at him if I were there. It was both unkind to my friend and unfair to my president and I regret it for both of those reasons very much. I will never say anything like that again, no matter who my president is.

Well don't feel bad about that, I say worse about presidents that I like, but then again I'm not exactly a fan of either side anymore and haven't been for years. Politicians for the most in my view are a bunch of liars and strictly in it for themselves, I certainly don't feel like they care about the country anymore, haven't for years. Seems everything's politically motivated and they care more about what their party thinks then what the people think. We headed down the wrong path and it happened a long time ago.

I thought would at least support him in this instance and just be happy that a sitting president eulogized someone with a song as precious to many Christians as "Amazing Grace," .

 

Did I ever say it was bad that he sang the song. I'm allowed to question though. When I see a man who went to a UCC Church in Chicago and is very open about that fact, then he sings a song about being saved by grace. The United Church of Christ does not believe in salvation through grace. I know, I am the former youth minister at St. Mark's UCC in Latonia. I served their from 2002-2006. I met my wife there and she grew up in that denomination. I know there doctrine. They would not say that salvation comes through Amazing Grace. President Obama is a member of the big UCC church in Chicago where JEremiah Wright (whom I have met personally) is the minister. I think it is called Unity or Trinity UCC.

 

If Billy Graham started singing "Hail Holy Queen" we would probably question why. Billy Graham is not a Catholic and does not believe the same things about Mary that Catholics do.

I don't deny there is a lot of ignorance walking around these days, but calling everyone in a state or an entire state racist is also ignorance. You become what you detest when you do that. What you are denying is that there are a lot of good people that treat others with respect, they aren't racist. I can't believe you of all people can't see what I've been driving at throughout this thread. Your comments have surprised me the most.

 

And, no it isn't1960. The president didn't get elected twice without votes (and lots of them) by white people.

 

We are LIGHT YEARS better off than we were in 1960. From a black person perspective, inter-racial marriage is almost universally accepted now, no black person has to even think about sitting at the back of the bus, black people can use any water fountain they want, we actually have a black president, black people cannot be refused to be served in a restaurant or hotel or anywhere else, black people can be the leads in TV show and movies, black people have much better access to education and jobs. This was not the case in 1960 in many parts of the country. I could go on and on. I am not saying things are perfect racially in the US...I am not. But to not say things are WAY better now for minorities than they were in 1960 is basically comical.

 

It drives me crazy that the narrative by much of the media and the typical race baiters (Sharpton, etc.) is that the US is actually getting worse in the world of race relations. Again, while not perfect, we are WAY better off now than we were 20, 40 or 60 years ago. But to say so is not good for business so we have to listen to non sense about how things are no better than back then...simply not true.

Your perceived "how it is" is not "how it is" just because you say or think it is.. And I am guilty as well... Everyone with an opinion thinks theirs is the right one... Not always so.

Unfortunately, I don't think it is possible for things to be PERCEIVED as much better in the 24 hour news cycle we live in now...even if they are. We live in a country with 300 million people. If 99% of the people are NOT racist then 3 million people are. That is still a lot of people. Every time someone does something overtly racist or deemed by the media to be racist (even if not), the media will jump on it because it is good for business and people take sides and tempers flare. Again, no doubt there is still racism in this country and every other country in the world. But my point is I think the country has made very positive strides in this area and will continue to do so. Younger generations are much more open to people of other races, sexual orientation, etc than older generations. However, nobody wants to publicize non-racist things...again not good for business...so while things are much better than they were there are actually a lot of people who think things are worse. Tell that to Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Bill Russell, MLK, Jane Pittman or MANY other minorities who had things MUCH worse than minorities do today. It is insulting to them to say that what they faced is not different than what minorities today face IMO.
