I tell my students all the time that I think its stupid for Boone County High School to call themselves the Rebels when Boone county itself was very pro-union during the war.

Instead of simply being in the moment of a wonderful Christian song sang by our president (have any other presidents done this in a eulogy? I don't know), you are judging him and his intentions. For a moment, I thought that this would be the one instant where at least non-racist opponents of his would say briefly, "well done." But then I took the rose-colored glasses off. Who said that you supported the Confederate flag?

I have lumped you into a category of people that I knew was an opponent of President Obama (though always respectful, to my knowledge) that I thought would at least support him in this instance and just be happy that a sitting president eulogized someone with a song as precious to many Christians as "Amazing Grace," as you post sermons frequently. However, my hopes were quickly dashed, so yes, I put you in that group that has disappointed me. That's pretty raw and I'm sorry about it, but it's the way that I feel.

I have to teach my kid how to properly handle being the only black kid in class. I really am not concerned with anyone else's thoughts. I'm trying to make sure my kid doesn't have a rough go of things in high school because of the color of his skin and the perspective that comes with it. Whole lot of ignorance walking around these days......
July 17, 201511 yr Nope. None of it was false. However, those who hate the president are not going to give him credit for ANYTHING that he does. I was not a fan of President George W. Bush. I even said some things about him (things that most people would shrug off) that I am not proud of. However, I was fully on board with his "guest worker" plan and made it plainly clear that I was in his corner on that idea. @Run To State is my witness on that one. Indeed you did, I remember it well. I also think you were respectful towards GWB 99.99% of the time, even when you didn't agree with him.

You become what you detest when you do that. What you are denying is that there are a lot of good people that treat others with respect, they aren't racist. I can't believe you of all people can't see what I've been driving at throughout this thread. Your comments have surprised me the most. And, no it isn't1960. The president didn't get elected twice without votes (and lots of them) by white people.

July 17, 201511 yr A shame, while I respect the Confederate flag as a part of my heritage, I deplore when it is used in the wrong manner and this is a great example regardless of whether the organizer is white, black, red or brown.

I once told me best friend, who is a very conservative history teacher and was going to listen to him speak, that I laugh at him if I were there. It was both unkind to my friend and unfair to my president and I regret it for both of those reasons very much. I will never say anything like that again, no matter who my president is.
