We felt very good about him and the improvement he’s making, but he has a very talented guy behind him that redshirted a year ago that’s pushing him in Drew Barker. It will be a healthy competition. Towles will have the leg up going into camp, but everything’s earned at Kentucky. We need to do that. There’s healthy competition at every position. Everybody likes to talk about the QB position, but all of our spots need to be earned."

July 26, 201511 yr I saw both him and Towles play in high school as well. Both were very impressive. The fact that Towles hasn't locked it up yet does say something. It's either Towles play is still inconsistent or Barker has stepped up his play to where they have made it tough on the coaches. Because you would have thought Towles would have easily locked it up by now. IMO Towles does have it locked up. At the end of spring practice UK only had 2 scholarship QBs on the roster (Reece Phillips is now back from injury) so Coach Stoops didn't want to name a starter to make sure Barker didn't get an inkling to transfer because he wasn't playing. Towles will be the starter and show vast improvement as the O Line now has a 3 deep on the depth chart and there is now a TE presence from Cleveland who I understand will get reps as a true frosh.

Every player who ever plays should battle to try to be the starter. However even though he should try to be the starter, its a two man race for that QB spot. Even though you claimed UK named Towles the starter already even though that never happened lol. Towles will probably get the nod to start, but the coaches will let Barker play some early to see how he would do as others have already posted too.

Stoops has said Phillips will be in the mix when practice starts. But he will have to learn the new playbook fast.
July 27, 201511 yr Towles is the more polished, professional QB. He deserves his snaps. If Barker wants to be the man, he had better gain some maturity.

July 27, 201511 yr Pat Towles is a winner and a leader. With improved depth in protection I look for an opportunity for him to excel this year. It will be interesting to see how Reese comes back from his injury. The few plays he got in last year really were hard to watch.
