Dog days of sports calendar are now

Featured Replies

For sports fans, this time of the year is the worst. No high school, no college. That's 2 biggies right there. Truth is, the sports world calendar goes like this...

Starts in August with College Football and HS Football

Adds NFL in September

Adds NBA and NHL in October, plus MLB playoffs -

all 4 major sports at once!

Adds College Hoops in Nov

You've got the college bowls/playoff, and NFL playoffs to get your through winter.

Then it's on to March Madness and the thrill of spring and return of MLB (the thrill dies soon after)

I'll even give you The Masters in April. But after all the schools let out, and the NBA and NHL playoffs wrap up in early June, the sports calendar comes to an end.

Right now these are the dog days... when all we have is baseball, tennis, golf, and auto racing. That's not much to get excited about. Yes, we caught a break the other day with the WWC, but we have some insufferable weeks to endure before the new sports season starts up again.

This is the most intense time of the year...it's time to prep for you Fantasy Football Draft, or in the case of BGP FF the draft has already started...I need coffee and I don't even drink coffee anymore.

Tour de France is happening as we type!

I believe if soccer wanted to really push in the American mainstream it would be now...this time of year. Begin April...end Sept.

Probably kill baseball

The sport's calendar has become the NFL season, then the NFL off season. Within in it are sprinkled moments that people pay attention to (March Madness, NBA Playoffs, World Series, etc.). Even through the NFL off season you have just as many headlines coming from it as you do with all the other sports. Despite it's faults, the NFL is a machine.

Give me HS and College hoops and football (and college softball), you can keep the rest.

Darn right! Me and the other sports hipsters are watching Wimbledon and the Tour this week. So much going on!

Love MLB this time of the year.

Love MLB this time of the year.

Judging by your avatar, I bet you do.

My hope yearly is for the Reds to stay in the hunt at least til Football season ramps up. Not this year. My wife not happy about it . . . as I come to bed earlier when cannot watch pathetic Reds. (add joke here!)

October is greatest month. College Football, HS Football, NFL to close the weekends. Throw in playoff baseball, Presidents or Ryder Cup golf, and Big Blue Madness (1st look at the new CATS).

Last but not least, Autumn days at Keeneland and all the scenery that entails.

Believe me, I know. Makes having a HS sports talk show kinda tough.

Likewise. Toggling between it and Wimbledon at lunch. Cobblestone sucks.

Not to hijack the thread.

But I was channel-surfing a day or two ago and there was a ladies' Wimbledon match in progress. It was absolutely refreshing to watch a ladies' match where the participants didn't sound like they were in the final throes of giving birth.

I once heard the day before the all star game and the day after are the only 2 days that no professional sports are going on? Trying to think of another day?

Come on now. You've got Wawrinka vs. Gasquet in the Wimbledon quarters tomorrow. If you can't run and hide with that, well...
