June 22, 201511 yr S.C. governor calls for removing Confederate flag from Capitol grounds COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley called Monday for the removal of the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds. "It's time to move the flag from the Capitol grounds," Haley said to applause at a news conference, while flanked by the state's congressional delegation and other leaders. Haley's impassioned speech follows Wednesday's killing of nine black church members by a white gunman who allegedly expressed racist sentiments. The massacre prompted many in the state to question whether the flag's presence on public property delivered a not-so-subtle message of bigotry. President Obama, who will travel to Charleston on Friday to deliver the eulogy for one of the victims, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, has said the flag should be removed and placed in a museum. Has the Stars and Bars Flag ran it's course? Is there any place that it is appropriate or OK for it to be in this day and age?
June 22, 201511 yr This will be interesting to follow. If it does happen, good; but it will be sad that it took a mass murder to get the ball rolling.

I say get rid of it. I also don't believe that flag had anything to do with that nut job killing the people. They are two different issues.

June 23, 201511 yr Why the 180-degree shift by Gov. Haley? When running for gov she cited lack of objections from the business community as her reason for keeping the Stars and Bars flying high. So has something changed on that front? Are we seeing business pressure similar to what occurred in Indiana a few months ago with that state's "religious freedom" law? Quite possibly.
June 23, 201511 yr Ironic that the flag was initially raised under a Democrat, and could possibly removed by a Republican.

June 23, 201511 yr ^ Money talks. Whenever they say it's not about the money...it's about the money... No truer words have ever been spoken...
June 23, 201511 yr Author What about old south politicians that use the Stars and Bars as part of their election...would they garner many votes in a modern day America...would anyone vote for a candidate using something like this?
June 23, 201511 yr Author It shouldn't be on any government building. Agreed, should it be anywhere...Except maybe in a museum or in history books?

Please don't throw stones on 180 change course when president Obama was against gay marriage as well as Hillary Clinton until 2012. Who cares why the change now if you didn't before.
June 23, 201511 yr Agreed, should it be anywhere...Except maybe in a museum or in history books? I don't have a problem with folks decorating their cars or homes with it. I think that should be allowed. It's their property.
