June 16, 201511 yr Can you imagine our lives without all these medical discoveries? Or what it would have been like around 100 years ago, where getting some of these diseases was a certain death sentence? 10. Anesthetics 9. Birth Control 8. MMR 7. X-Ray 6. Insulin 5. IVF 4. June 16, 201511 yr I would argue (not here) that this was actually one of the worst discoveries/medical inventions. Would you prefer way more abortions instead?
June 16, 201511 yr Would you prefer way more abortions instead? I'd prefer people who don't want to have children to not have sex. And just to be clear (not that you said I said different), I am talking strictly about Artificial Birth Control. I have no problem with NFP.
June 16, 201511 yr Viagra didnt rise up on this list, surprised. Funny, it was on the list when I looked 4 hours ago.
June 16, 201511 yr #1 and it isn't close ... gene mapping. It is leading to incredible medical breakthroughs now and many more in the coming years.

It is leading to incredible medical breakthroughs now and many more in the coming years. ...it's also one of the many that wouldn't be anywhere near to possible were it not for the invention of electrical magnification. If we were still looking through optic lense microscopes, we'd have no clue what a gene looked like.

June 16, 201511 yr Insulin. If it were 1920 or earlier, and a child was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, that was pretty much a death sentence. That child would not live much longer. Very difficult for me to fathom that. Also--if we have artificial hearts, heart valves, stints, replacement joints, and we can make babies in test tubes and preselect the child's sex, if we can give someone a sex change, and do implants after implants, why have we not yet discovered an artificial pancreas? Why have we not discovered a way to transplant a pancreas? I know where all my medical donations will go from now on. Forget the obnoxiously trendy month of pink and race for the cure and Susan B. Komen. Rant over. As the father of a child with Type 1 diabetes, I agree with you. What's sad is, scientists were on the verge of basically curing diabetes some time ago, but they were utilizing stem cell research in their efforts. When all of the hick hack over Stem Cells came about, they had to stop the work that they had done. Fortunately, there seems to be hope in creating an artificial Pancreas. Hopefully soon.....
June 16, 201511 yr How many here are allergic to penicillin besides me? :taz: My father is. He can't take aspirin either.

The history behind insulin is quite fascinating. In the early 1920's they were studying pancreas on dogs, and experimenting with diabetic dogs. They finally tried it on a 14-yr-old boy who was dying. They revived him, and then went and gave insulin shots to all the diabetic children that lay comatose in a Toronto hospital. Results were miraculous, as all were revived.
June 16, 201511 yr Eventually, they'll get the third boob addition surgery down pat, and that one will go rocketing up the chart.
