June 15, 201511 yr Heard the Commish say he does not want to change the "Hack A" rule from its current form of it being allowed except in the last two minutes because it only pertains to a few players. He also said that coaches have emailed him saying, "Do not change it because you should be able to make foul shots in the NBA." So he says no change next year and then maybe they will re-address it. IMO it is an intentional foul and should be called as one. I have no idea why anyone wants to see the game stopped by hugging and some 17% shooter go to the line over and over. Or if you are going to allow it then why the ban in last 2 minutes? What say you?
June 15, 201511 yr I have mixed emotions about it. I don't enjoy watching it but don't think a guy should get protection just because he cannot make free throws. The easiest way to stop it is to learn how to make at least 60% of your free throws. I frankly don't know why it is banned the final two minutes. I don't like the fact that the rule changes in the final two minutes.
June 16, 201511 yr Give the team that is fouled the option of retaining possession without shooting FTs. That's what the competition committee will be pondering.
June 16, 201511 yr You can't change the rule just to protect players who can't shoot free throws. It's the easiest part of basketball. It is also part of strategy. It's a joke to consider it.
June 16, 201511 yr My biggest problem with it is that it's NOT a basketball play. I understand why the defense does it, and I agree that the rule shouldn't be changed because players can't make FT's. There is obviously a lot of strategy involved, but it's not a basketball play. I don't know what the solution is. My gut says make it a technical foul & award the offense one shot & the ball. Haven't given it too much thought, though.

With rule changes that favor offense in basketball and in other sports, I'm surprised that this one hasn't been changed yet.
June 16, 201511 yr It's almost as weak as the flop charges that some are famous for. Hated it when Golden State used it, hated it when Cleveland used it, hated in when Pop created it. It's not basketball. Basketball is currently the only sport where you can dictate what your opponent does. Can't make a football team punt, go for two, pass/run. Can't force the worst hitter to come to the plate (out of turn) in baseball. It's lame. Just play basketball and save the fouling to when you're in desperation in the last two minutes.
June 16, 201511 yr Author You can't change the rule just to protect players who can't shoot free throws. It's the easiest part of basketball. It is also part of strategy. It's a joke to consider it. They already changed it. You can't do it in the last 2 minutes. So why ban it in the last 2 minutes but allow hugging the rest of the game?
June 17, 201511 yr I like that it brings a higher level of strategy to the game. I agree with the comments on "free throws are easy, NBA players should be able to make them, etc." but remember that these guys are freaks (in a good way). Their hands are so big and muscles so strong that a basketball is to me as a tennis ball is to Deandre Jordan. Keep the rules how they are. IMO.
June 17, 201511 yr I don't like the intentional foul 40ft away from the ball, but I don't like rewarding a team that has crappy free throw shooter on the court either. I say leave it alone.
June 17, 201511 yr On one hand I say work on your craft and hit your freebies. How some of these guys were allowed to developers bad habits at the line during their bring baffles me. On the other hand it's the definition of an intentional foul.
June 26, 201511 yr Absolutely hate seeing it, but a pro that brings this baggage to the team should not be protected. Your game has pluses and minuses and the strategy of hack-a-shack might embarrass one enough to become at least a 60% foul shooter. Get yourself to work, or risk a shorter stay in the league or at least on the floor.
