I don't want to take anything away from Secretariat. After all, he holds the records in all three races which I have you-tubed like a million times, and I have read three books about him...so I am a fan.

 

However, AP's second 3/4 was as fast as his first 3/4 in the Belmont, and that is very unusual. His 2nd 3/4 was also faster 113+ than Secretariat's 114+. None of this really means anything, but interesting anyway.

I read where Churchill will parade him on the track and maybe in the paddock on Saturday when the Stephen Foster is the headliner. I expect a big crowd, weather permitting.

 

If you're an insurance underwriter and AP's owners wanted to continue to race him, how would you set a premium to insure against a debilitating injury that would prevent AP from breeding in the future? Is there such insurance? How do you project whether or not his offspring will be successful runners? I've read where his projected stud fees would be $6-7 million annually. I assume that would change in the future based on how well his crops do.

Obviously Secretariat was a once in a lifetime horse, probably even rarer than that. AP certainly proved himself worthy to the naysayers though.

There are some horse racing experts who wonder if Man o War was just as great as Secretariat. I don't know nearly enough about Man o War nor do I understand what was going on that his owners decided to hold him from the Derby so I really cannot answer. However, many experts agree and those two definitely fill the top two spots.

I doubt he ever races again. Too much $$ in stud fees lost if something crazy happens. Owners really don't have much of a choice. It would be a huge gamble if he ran again.

 

Technically the owners have no risk at all. Breeding rights were already sold for $14 million so unless the purchase contract stated that AP had to stop racing after a certain point (which very well may have), there is no financial risk if the owners wanted to run him in a few Grade 1 races a year.

AP's father, Pioneer of the Nile, has had a nice little jump in fees. They had already risen from $20,000 to $60,000 and people are now predicting they will go to $100,000.

This makes three in my adult lifetime. I thought Frosted would win but I'm glad for AP.

I think it would depend on what foals your wife has thrown with other studs and how they performed versus how your foals performed. Maybe the value is in her.:lol2:

American Pharoah was being pressured somewhat through out the race to the finish line.

 

Secretariat was not pressured at all through out the race. What would his time be if he had been whipped throughout and / or challenged till the end? Much faster IMO.

Better watch that race again, Secretariat was pushed HARD for the first half of the race. The other horses died out and he was able to cruise home without any more pressure which saves energy and actually helps a horse. AP came home faster than Secretariat.

 

Regardless, Secretariat wins by daylight over just about any horse in history. If he's not the best he's a close second. AP is the first TC winner in 37 years which makes him special in his own right.
