Surprised that no thread was already started.

It's really amazing to me, that in a historically Catholic nation, that 62% of country approved it.

I'm Catholic, don't understand why anyone (regardless of faith) would be opposed to it.

Thanks Obama.

Are you sure this isn't on G.W.?

Based on how empty Irish churches are during mass, being Catholic in Ireland is becoming more and more a cultural/heritage thing than a practicing faith thing if that makes sense. American Jews are seeing this to a large degree too, proud to be Jewish, just never go to temple or follow the faith to any degree.

Well, it won't be long until America joins Ireland.

I only have a problem with changing the definition of the word. I know it seems minor and the language is a fluid thing but that is how I feel about it.

Get with, who you want to get with...Why not call it something else?

I honestly didn't think anybody still thought this. Not trying to be rude, but does a word really carry SO much power for you?

I mean, you even admit to acknowledging the fluidity of language, so I'm just confused by it.

This may surprise some but up until about 5 minutes ago when I did a google search I really had no idea how many states within the United States have made gay marriages legal. I've sorta followed the issue over the last couple of years, but really not that closely. I personally have no intentions of ever tying the knot in a formal legal fashion.

I support it though, and mainly for legal reasons. I've heard of situations where someone's partner will pass away, and the family of the deceased who've pretty much all along had disregarded the union, and had shunned them will despicably swoop on in and tell the partner to go fly a kite, and try to contest the will. With the union being recognized as legitimate, then in the future it will be very hard legally for these type of scenarios to take place.

4 years ago my partner had passed away, and luckily his relatives, though many miles away, were very supportive. Because I was a Kentucky resident, and he a resident of Ohio, I legally could not be the executor of his estate, and while I literally did the work because I was knowledgeable of all of his matters, legally he had to appoint his blood related nephew 14 hours away to be the executor who basically just signed all the papers. Everything went smoothly, and he also had a gay lawyer from Cincinnati handle everything who was well versed in seeing it through.

Although attitudes are thankfully changing, the debate for some religiously inclined is that it's morally unacceptable and a smack in the face to traditional values. While some may continue to try to drive that argument home, it's really hard for me to see where anyone would have trouble understanding that it is a deserved right for people to be legally protected, just as everyone gay or straight should be.

The tally that I discovered through my google search for anyone interested is that gay marriage is now legal in 37 states and not recognized in 13, however 8 states are presently in appeal with one of them being Kentucky. Although the 13 states against are mostly in the bible belt, with as swiftly as things have changed over the last couple of years, I'm guessing that before too long very close to all 50 states will soon make it legal.

With Ireland now making it legal only Northern Ireland remains the only part of the United Kingdom where it is illegal. With that being the case we should expect to see in the news where they'll be highly pressured to get with the program and line themselves up with the rest of the UK. I believe that it's been legal in England and Wales for about a year now.

I used to be against gay marriage but, like many others, I have changed. It's just not a big deal to me.

I'm not opposed . I'm a libertarian and it's a government issue.

But I understand why the Catholic Church is against and I respect their right to not hold gay ceremonys. As long as the government respects that right I'm cool.

Funny how the word marriage can be in solid rock while gay has changed dramatically over 30 years.

Not to mention the divorce rate which really indicates how our nation cherishes marriage.
