May 28, 201511 yr Marriage is not about health benefits or tax credits. Supporters of gay marriage argue it is about love. I argue that is about love between a man and a woman in Christ to procreate. Here's a my perspective: If you saw someone standing on the edge of a bridge, you would try to help them, right? Picture gay marriage as a moral bridge: I see it as I see people on the verge of severely damaging their relationship with God, so I'm trying to help them and show them what's right. I know you may not be a theist/Christian or whatever (and this is really addressing all readers, not you specifically), but we Christians believe we are called to help others in that sense and try to bring them to God. And we believe that allowing Marriage (the sacred union between a man and a woman with God) to lose its meaning and importance in the world is pushing people away from God. I'm Christian and that isn't true at all. Don't try to project your beliefs as that of all Christians.
May 28, 201511 yr But if gay people and straight people have the "same" love, whose to say that dogs can't either? Dogs are always excited to see their owners and sad when they leave. I understand how ridiculous this argument sounds. But there are people who would not dispute it. Are you purposely ignoring the "consenting adults" aspect of it?
May 28, 201511 yr Author I'm Christian and that isn't true at all. Don't try to project your beliefs as that of all Christians. Perhaps its for another thread, but what is the purpose of being a Christian then?
May 28, 201511 yr Author Are you purposely ignoring the "consenting adults" aspect of it? Fair enough.
May 28, 201511 yr Perhaps its for another thread, but what is the purpose of being a Christian then? It sure as hell isn't to judge others and tell them who they can or can't be in a relationship with.
May 28, 201511 yr Author It sure as hell isn't to judge others and tell them who they can or can't be in a relationship with. I did not say that was the purpose. I said it is to bring people to God. How do you bring others to God? Tell them what is right (towards God) and wrong (away from God). I've said it in this thread twice, and I'll say it again. I'm okay with civil unions. I am not saying that two men cannot have a relationship. I am saying that that relationship is not marriage, and if we consider it marriage, then eventually any type of bond will be considered marriage. I know its a stretch and I know my beliefs are pretty extreme.

As I said before, just because you believe something is right or wrong, doesn't make it so. Those are your beliefs. No more, no less. Just as mine are mine and that's it.
May 28, 201511 yr Author And I'm saying Christians don't all believe that allowing gay marriage will pull people away from God. To say that is beyond absurd IMO. That's a valid point. When addressing the marriage issue, I should have put Catholics, whose beliefs are in line with the Vatican. I admit I was wrong there (although most people on this board would say I'm wrong in all of my points )

May 28, 201511 yr Author I'm Catholic. Once again, you shouldn't try to project your beliefs to all Catholics. Everything I've said and believe is the belief from the Catholic Church. Which is why I said, I should have typed "Catholics whose beliefs are in line with the Vatican."
May 28, 201511 yr Everything I've said and believe is the belief from the Catholic Church. Which is why I said, I should have typed "Catholics whose beliefs are in line with the Vatican." And as I've said, not everyone that is Catholic believes what you've posted. In fact, I'd wager most don't.
May 28, 201511 yr Author And as I've said, not everyone that is Catholic believes what you've posted. In fact, I'd wager most don't. You'll strongly disagree with me on this. But to me: calling oneself Catholic involves agreeing with the Vatican on these issues among other things. And you are right; I'd say the majority of Catholics do not even know what the Vatican teaches, and if they were to learn, they would disagree.

And you are right; I'd say the majority of Catholics do not even know what the Vatican teaches, and if they were to learn, they would disagree. Just because you are a certain faith, doesn't mean you have to agree with it in every aspect. To blindly do so is incredibly foolish IMO.
May 28, 201511 yr Author Just because you are a certain faith, doesn't mean you have to agree with it in every aspect. To blindly do so is incredibly foolish IMO. But where do we draw the line? Can I go worship Allah and talk about how murder is okay and still call myself Catholic? Was Adolf Hitler a true Catholic? Blind following is foolish. That's why I'm thankful I went to Catholic schools for 12 years and learned why the Church teaches what it teaches. And I still have questions today, but when I look up the answers or contact people who know the answers, I have come to find that the teachings are not foolish. But what it comes down to for the majority is the point you made in #71 . Right on the money. Most nominal Catholics don't know/don't agree with what the Church teaches.

I am saying that that relationship is not marriage, and if we consider it marriage, then eventually any type of bond will be considered marriage. I know its a stretch and I know my beliefs are pretty extreme. There are a bunch of different God's that are worshiped (although all have some common threads), and the one you (not directed specifically at you) believe in and the way you worship Him, is largely dependent on what part of the world your parents were born in. And I know that I'm opening up a whole can of worms, but who's to say that one set of beliefs is necessarily the correct ideology? This randomness is what makes it difficult for me to use religion as a reason to support/disapprove an issue like gay marriage. It's also why I'm not big on trying to lead other's down the road I've chosen, or blindly subscribe and follow a specific form of Christianity.
