FWIW, guy that brok the story for NOLA.com, reported on ESPN that Cal contacted the Pelicans about the position, they did not reach out to him.

 

Money couldn't get worked out, sounds like that was a pretty quick stumbling block, and the Pelicans moved on.

Once the new TV deal goes though he will get payed more anywhere he goes. Yes his Max deal with the Pelicans will go up, but a max deal with another team in a few years will be more than a Pelicans max deal now. It will be interesting to see which route he chooses

I think Cal has 2 seasons left at UK, maybe less depending on free agency. I don't buy into many Cal rumors, but I think he would've taken the Cavs job had LBJ to Cleveland been a "done deal". It also helped that UK had one of the best recruiting classes ever.

Either way, I think he's smart enough to know that he needs a superstar wherever he goes. Personally, I'd love to see him in Washington with Kevin Durant & John Wall.

That could wind up hurting his pro options, especially depending on what other coaches wind up on the market.

 

If he gets the right offer this season, it doesn't surprise me if he goes. He leaves the uncertainty that is this year's group, and has the 2015 season to start shaping the roster how he wants. What this years team will be closer to the NIT than the final four? So you believe this years team will struggle to make the tournament? That NIT was a NIT because they not only didn't have as much talent as usual but also basically no experience. This years UK team compares a lot more like the Brandon Knight final four team than the NIT team. They will have a pg with his head on straight to run the team to keep the younger players in line. A very talented guard in Briscoe, arguably the top player in the country coming in at center, then two very athletic guys in Alex and Lee. It probably won't be a great offensive team but should be a great defensive team with a good enough offense.

 

What Cal has at UK good or bad won't stop him from going if the right situation comes along, unless he has a team that could go 40 and 0 like last year or else he would have already taken the Cabs job.

I think next year's Kentucky team will be pretty damn good. I also think Cal's stint at UK is past the 50% mark.

The 2013 isn't in the NIT if Noel doesn't have a season ending injury. This team will be just fine. If they land Murray, I feel confident they could make another run at a Final Four.

So when was "contact" with the Pelicans apparently made? Did this happen to be one day before Cal signed his extension at UK?

Which is what we are dealing with this upcoming season. The talent across the board will be down.

Here's what has to happen for Calipari to take an NBA job:

 

• Because of the compensation package at UK, and the way salaries are now for NBA head coaches (only Doc Rivers, at $10m per year, makes more than Cal's current salary), I see no circumstance where Cal accepts an NBA head coaching position at a pay rate that's not at least $10m per year.

 

• That, in turn, would require a team owner to make a man who was a smashing failure in his first stint in the NBA the highest-paid coach in the league this time around, with no guarantees. I just don't see an NBA team taking that risk when they would likely feel, based on history, that they can get just as good a coach for $2m per year, and pocket the other $8m (or more) they would be paying Calipari.

 

I just don't see any scenario where an NBA team is going pay him that much with no guarantee he's going to be any better than the first time around.

The in-game things that ultimately got Monty Williams fired are the same weaknesses Cal has.
