I agree with those that said it was an entertaining game but not exceptionally well played. Several sloppy turnovers, lots of missed shots, etc.

 

Neither team was able to knock down a clutch shot.

 

Romes' tip in & Bo's dunk late were both HUGE plays. You could almost feel CCH take control of the game when Bo dunked.

 

Bolden is a heckuva player, but he was off tonight. I thought he settled too often and he struggled with his shot. By all accounts, he's a good kid with a bright future. I wish him well at WV & look forward to following his career.

I can't believe how many easy layups were missed in this one. Romes missed a couple then got the rebound attempt tip in. McClendon missed how many layups? There were more by other players as well. It really was an ugly game.

Walter - put up video of Avery blocking CVH's layup at the very end of the game. I was watching to see if he was going to charge and didn't see the block. A lot of folks thought it was off of the backboard and on its way down.

 

Helluva effort to get there.

 

Block looked clean, Great job by Schuh to grab the rebound. He kept the ball alive many times tonight and last night.

 

Great block. Looked like it may have been a goaltend for my perspective but I had a very poor angle to judge. Great effort by Avery & a huge block in a crucial moment.

 

I saw goaltend. I'd be shocked if I was wrong.

CovCath beats Holmes to win Ninth Region title

 

 

CovCath is headed back to Rupp Arena for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Sweet 16.

 

The Colonels trailed Holmes for most of the regional championship game, but turned it on in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to pull away for a 45-37 win Tuesday night at the Bank of Kentucky Center. Sophomore guard Cole VonHandorf scored a game-high 17 points and was named Most Valuable Player of the Ninth Region tournament.

 

"I just learned last year watching Nick Ruthsatz take over our team," VonHandorf said. "With him leaving, I knew I had to take over. We were down most of the game, and I figured my team needed me to step up. I got my shots, and it ended up working out."

 

CovCath will face Campbell County in the first round of the Sweet 16 March 18 at 6:30 pm. The Camels beat Scott 89-57 in Tuesday night's 10th Region championship.

Surprised not more people have mentioned this issue. Holmes was effective when they were pushing it and not letting CCH get settled in on defense. This 2 minute or so stall-ball at the end of the 3rd quarter I think took some wind out of Holmes mojo. I thought they were up by more than 2 at the time but don't recall exactly. Holmes never seemed to get back in synch after that 2 minute stretch, not that either team was ever firing on all cylinders.

If you go back and look at my update threads there were a TON of missed "point blank"shots by EVERY team throughout the tournament.

#14 Mullins for Holmes is going need to grow up a little if he is going to be all he can be for the Dawgs next year. I get coming out of the game, who likes that...but pouting and "hard slapping" his teammates for half a quarter in the biggest game of the year, unacceptable. It's not all about you, son.

 

I respect #15 Moore for Holmes for trying to get his teammates head right and for Coach L for not budging, letting him sit and stew for a while. He eventually got back in the game.

Agree with both of these post. Coaching as in most games had a big impact in the final result. I thought the adjustment CCH made at halftime to keep Bolden from penetrating the lane and either getting a nice 10'-8' jump shot or dishing off for an easy basket was the difference in the game. Holmes offense was effective (not great but good enough to win) in the first half, CCH made a defensive adjustment and Holmes never found one to counter, Holmes 4 of 22 field goals in the second half is the evidence to back this up.

It seemed like almost every player that was pulled out of the game for them against Dixie on Monday night was "pouting" as well. I thought the same thing, this is a game where you are fighting for your life, there is no time for selfishness.

 

I may catch heat for saying this, but I also thought Holmes "bigs" were very selfish in the last 2 games. With the exception of #15 , every time the ball went into the post it was shot. I thought that several shots were forced up over much bigger defenders when they could've been kicked out for an open shot or to get deeper post position. I understand that when the ball entered the paint it was 5-7 feet from the basket, but at some point I would think that going strong against a defender who is much taller than you and who has stopped you several times before would not be the best option for you.

Totally disagree with you on this. Not making shots was the difference. There was no magic strategy or adjustments made other than Coach R going out of the Man to Man during the game. I'm sorry, that is not genius.

 

Coaching was fine and good for both teams. It was simply CCH made more plays the last 4 minutes. Drives me crazy when there are thoughts that there were great adjustments and decisions made. That was just not the case last night. It was the players.
