2016 Newport Central Catholic forward Ben Weyer is having a tremendous junior season so far for one of the top teams in the state. Ben is a very versatile forward that can play both inside and outside. He’s a good perimeter shooter and can take slower defenders off the dribble and score at the rim. He’s a good rebounder and a very good finisher around the rim. He does need to get stronger, but that should come as he continues to develop.

 

Right now Furman and South Carolina Upstate are the two schools recruiting Ben. He mentioned that he may make a visit to Furman and that both Furman and South Carolina Upstate are planning to watch him play this season. He’s receiving relatively little contact right now but I expect that will pick up as he plays his last season of AAU this summer.

 

Ben mentioned ball-handling and getting stronger in the offseason as two of the main things he’d like to work on. However, he also mentioned wanting to improve his post moves so that he can score over the usually smaller defenders that guard him.

He mentioned that their expectations for the rest of the year are to really focus on winning their region and making it to the state tournament. After that Ben said he thinks they have a good shot, “Make it out of region, and if we can do that I think we have a chance at state. We just have to play together and play well.”

I think next year will be pivotal for this junior. No doubt NCC is a tough team to defend with both him and McDonald. Next year he'll have to carry the load inside. Love to watch those two look for each other on offense!

Very happy to see Ben doing so well this year. He struggled over the Summer for the Travelers because he had little help inside, would be very shocked if he didn't have a good summer and earn several offers.

Ben deserves all the success he receives. He works hard and is a great kid!

He, Matt Wilson and Carson Williams are the only front line players on the current Travelers roster. He should definitely have plenty of opportunities to play a "stretch 4" position with that group.

Add Coastal Carolina and Boston University to the list. I think his list will keep growing over the summer with AAU ball. Ben is great kid on and off the court. He is great in the classroom as well. Good luck Ben!

The biggest reason Ben has made such a jump from last year to this year...confidence.

 

This past summer really helped him a lot with his confidence and it was on full display once AAU ball ended and he was playing high school ball this summer. So versatile and can do so much at both ends with his length and athleticism. He has also gotten a lot more aggressive which has helped him inside.
