I have a stored file (that I probably copied from a BGP thread a while back) that has all the 9th Region tournaments from 1932-2011.

 

I'll post the file if and when I figure out how to.

 

In 1976 Bellevue beat Highlands in the first round of the 9th Region Tournament 81-80 in 2 OT's in Kenny Shields' first season as head coach of Highlands

 

The next year, 1977, Holmes knocked Bellevue out of the 9th Region Tournament 115-56, while Highlands beat CovCath 74-60.

 

Newport turned around and beat Highlands in the 2nd round 75-74, and then Holmes beat Newport 77-76 in the Finals.

 

Judging by those score it would suggest that Highlands was a much better team than Bellevue in '77

 

In the years following, all the way until now, I can't find any evidence, or any logic that would suggest that Bellevue ever got past Highlands.

 

If 1976 is the last time they did, then this victory tonight is certainly a historical one.

A couple of years ago Terry Boehmker put out a book called "9th Region Royalty" that would undoubtedly have reference to this.

 

I bought the book and gave it to my older brother as a retirement gift (should have bought a copy for myself too).

My younger brother played at Lex. Lafayette with Dirk Minnifield and Tony Wilson in 1977, and they played Newport. I remember game at Newport and they had a 6-6 guy named Mitch McIntosh who could score on anyone. I have the box score here from the Npt/Lafayette game and Npt. also had Leonard Slaughter, Darrel Bedford, Dave Schlosser, Bill Weier, Clint Miller as players who scored. I would bet Mitch McIntosh is the player you mention for Newport. Dirk had 20 in this box score and Newport rolled over the Generals.

Highlands squeaked by Dayton 55-51 last week so their 1st round District game is no gimme for the Birds.

Wow. Nice win for Tigers. Epic result for both programs. I almost fell off the couch.

Junior guard Matthew Fryman grabbed a rebound and scored with 1.5 seconds left to lift Bellevue to a 61-60 win over Highlands on Friday.

What about the baseball comeback win over Highlands in the District tourney a few years back. I was walking to my car thinking Highlands won it when this skinny Bellevue freshman(might have been an 8th grader, cannot remember) Dylan Huff dove into first to start a rally for that comeback win.
