I was wondering the same thing. I'm a 10th region guy and have no clue but it doesn't seem like it happens very often.

Hometown Tigers Win On A Last second tip in Is the Report I got from a Bellevue Assistant coach. As happy as I am for my Alma Matre I am just as sad for the Sr's at Highlands. They are all good kids and work hard in the gym.

Last time I remember hearing of the Tigers beating Highlands is the 1977 Regional Tourney when Steve Ridder played.

If I'm not mistaken the deficit was either 15 or 17 at one time in the 2nd half with the Tigers leading pretty much the entire game. Kudos to the Birds for never giving up and briefly taking the lead with about 20 seconds to go I n the game. A simple box out at the Tip in would of secured the wind for the Birds......Heartbreaking that they fought from that far back to fall just short!!!!

I have a stored file (that I probably copied from a BGP thread a while back) that has all the 9th Region tournaments from 1932-2011.

 

I'll post the file if and when I figure out how to.

 

In 1976 Bellevue beat Highlands in the first round of the 9th Region Tournament 81-80 in 2 OT's in Kenny Shields' first season as head coach of Highlands

 

The next year, 1977, Holmes knocked Bellevue out of the 9th Region Tournament 115-56, while Highlands beat CovCath 74-60.

 

Newport turned around and beat Highlands in the 2nd round 75-74, and then Holmes beat Newport 77-76 in the Finals.

 

Judging by those score it would suggest that Highlands was a much better team than Bellevue in '77

 

In the years following, all the way until now, I can't find any evidence, or any logic that would suggest that Bellevue ever got past Highlands.

 

If 1976 is the last time they did, then this victory tonight is certainly a historical one.
