My thoughts from last night:

 

Willis needs someone to help him next time when he tries to cut his own hair.

 

Nice for them to get a solid road with Booker having an okay game and WCS being nonexistent. Might be sacrilegious for a UK fan to say this, but I'm not really sure why he's up for POY Contention. Love the guy and the way he plays, but I don't think he's in the conversation.

 

Andrew played pretty solid and that's what we need from him come March.

 

The way Marcus Lee claps is starting to get on my nerves.

 

Towns needs to continue maturing and developing. He's good at blocking shots, but overall on defense, he seems to be out of position or leaves a double when he shouldn't.

 

All in all, I'll take a 16 point road win any time.

 

I agree about Willie. I think he's far and away the best defensive player in the country, but hell, he's not even the POY for the team, let alone a legit contender for NPOY.

To be fair, he shoots 34% from the field, 31% from three-point range, and has a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He's not terrible, and he did play well last night, but he's an average point guard who needs lots of improvement. The good thing is he's just a sophomore and if he'll stay in school he should get much better.

Teams play Kentucky ugly, gimmicky strategic games and when the refs are like they were last night it makes it even more uglier. Boring as heck to watch.

 

But it was a win, on the road, and on to the next game.

 

On another note, Willis and Hawkings had two nice assists to finish the game but unfortunately they were to the opposing teams. They threw passes in directions where there wasn't a blue uni within 20 feet.

Agreed. Nobody is going to run with Kentucky, and rightfully so.

Honestly, I'd love to see every game called like that. IIRC, that is what they tried to do across the board at the start of last season. I hate how ugly it makes the games, but if they called it consistent, eventually teams would have to change. Too many games where people just hack each other to pieces.

I am with you. Last season they made a conscientious effort to blow the whistle which created more flow once players got adjusted. It seems they reverted back to their old ways this season and defenders are allowed to drape all over guys again, making games unbearable to watch. Last night they officiated how they did last season; but, the product was bad because guys have been conditioned to this year's standards.

Every little bump between bigs was being called. Not even when they were attacking the basket but just battling for position.

 

As a Kentucky fan, I feel like its great the officials call it that tight. As a college basketball fan, it was awful to watch.

Totally agree with you.

The displacement of the offensive player is called so differently from night to night in college basketball, it's not even funny. However, I'll tell you this; one of the officials last night was Doug Sirmons, who called the Final Four last year. I've seen him call 4-5 games this year and he is very consistent with calling it tight. There's a reason he's working a pretty good schedule and a reason why he's calling the Final Four.

Agreed. But teams are playing UK as physical as possible and one of their strategies is to foul. Its a foul nearly every time UK gets the ball in the interior. The hope is the refs won't call everyone of them, and they don't. I know there's been complaints over some of UK's bigs getting stripped of the ball too easily, but a lot of times those are no call fouls leading to the turnover.

Teams aren't going to stop fouling when they play the Cats. It's part of their game plan. But that's not to say UK doesn't foul either. I just don't think it's part of their strategy, though.

I agree with all of your post but as for the bolded.....I have to say that if I were coaching against U.K., that's more than likely the way that I would try to play them. Do as much as humanly possible to disrupt the flow / rythym of the game. That's basically the only shot if any that most teams will have to beat U.K., if that.

O, I agree with what you say. No doubt teams aren't going to run and gun with UK. Definitely no Bahamas dunkfest type games to see.

I'm just saying it's the games like last night are boring and aggravating to watch. But it can't be avoided because we will see more throughout the rest of the season and into the post season.
