You are right. I don't know if he is guilty of a crime, and I don't know his family likely some of you pretend to. But I can tell you that the kid needs to grow up fast, because he is proving that he is either a spoiled brat or an idiot. Once you get in trouble, deserved or not, you run from fights if you are an athlete that could make news. Everyone that says that "boys will be boys" or "college kids drink" are absolutely right. But, here is the big but, if you are trying to win the starting quarterback job at an SEC school, you are not a normal college student. He doesn't want to be treated like a normal student when it is supper time. He eats at the athlete mess hall. He doesn't want to beat treated like a normal student when tuition is due. It is paid for. Quit taking up for these kids, make them grow up and maybe we will be successful some day in football. Why aren't the basketball players getting in trouble? We win in basketball.

 

It's lot easier to keep 12 kids in check than it is to keep 85 kids in check.

Nope! But apparently the type and severity of the discipline isn't sending the message. A kid looks at it as "hey, I can do just about anything and whats going to happen, run a little or miss one game. Psssh! That aint nothing." "Hey, anyone want to go to a bar where I can get in with my fake ID?"

 

Yeah, going to the bar is really no big deal. Almost all college kids have done it. My kids included. But it's what it may lead to is the issue. Especially with high profile people and athletes.

 

Totally generalizing here as to who, not calling any individual out but hopefully you get my gist!

A DUI is a potentially fatal event. It should absolutely be treated with severe consequences. But like I said I wasn't talking about any particular instance at UK, just the fact that a conviction should have nothing to do with the punishment if the action causes embarrassment to the program.

So what are severe enough consequences for a DUI in your opinion?

No but It would help in a case where a player is in an accident and alcohol is involved. I think making it a high profile helps in a lot of ways both inside and outside a program.

He hasn't gone to trial yet. So now we're throwing kids off misdemeanor that haven't even been settle in court yet?

Back to my original point, Stoops has a loose policy this far, no surprise his team is not good he needs to collect pieces. I don't see Barker going anywhere unless we see him with the bottle, or something of that nature, Stoops wouldn't have a choice.

Coaches do not have to wait for the legal process to discipline a player. I do think Stoops should have done something as circumstances warranted it. I don't know that it makes him very loose with discipline but it does give me pause.

 

I applaud you 75 for taking a strong stance on a situation that could have claimed a young life as we saw in 1998.

 

Regardless if its UK, OSU, UL the player has to face a severe punishment but I am ok with them coming back at some point if they clean up. Jules Camera had to sit out a year, I think that fits the crime although, as it turns out for Jules didn't help him much in the long run.

To me it doesn't matter if the charge is dismissed. He had a blood alcohol almost twice the legal limit. A coach does not have to follow the legal process to make a point to a player, his team and it's fan base.

In his short time at UK, Drew Barker seems to have his name in the news for all the wrong reasons. There are about 10,000 other D-1 college football players who have managed not to do that. If I'm coach I can't say I would be to excited about my hopes of future success being put in the hands of a guy like this.

 

I seem to remember 2 recent Heisman trophy winners who have had their name in the news a lot more and for even worse reasons, and it seem like the success of their teams on the field were pretty good. Now not saying any of this is ok though, because you would rather hear nothing negative at all with players. However especially in his two instances that he has been in the news. We still have no idea how involved he was in this case, now the pellet gun incident was just dumb on his part I admit.

But as I've said 3 different times now: I wasn't talking about this or any particular incident. I don't know why you guys continue to focus on that. The coach does not have to wait until a player is convicted in court to punish them or even hold them out pending a court case. It is their team. If a player does something to embarrass the program they can punish them immediately and as severely as they wish.
