Schools with "non-wood" basketball courts/floors?

Featured Replies

We had a home game last night and opposing coach was asking about our floor. We have a synthetic floor that was actually poured, left to cure then had a finishing process done to it to complete it. It's a very good surface and very easy to maintain, can be scrubbed with just water using a basic floor scrubber. Has been very durable and it very "grippy" when clean. We looked at the maple wood floor option when building the gym, but expense and upkeep was just too much, not to mention we would be using the gym as a multi-purpose facility as well. Seems like there was a trend to go with these type floors just a few years ago, now seems to have swung back to traditional wooden floors.

What schools out there have a non-wood floor? And for those of you who have played on a modern synthetic floor (not that crappy stuff they were using in the 80's), what do you think?

Does Bourbon County High School still have the floor that was like rubber? I'm not sure exactly what it was, but it was cushioned.

Bourbon County Girls Gym, some type of rubber overlay.

Calvary Christian has a parquet over concrete...one of the worst ever for your legs, hips, knees, etc...

I'm not sure if St. Pat's in Maysville is an overlay or not.

Bellevue had one like this for quite some time, but it was replaced......maybe 20 years ago?????

The early "rubber" floors were almost like hard wrestling mats...they were terrible. I remember playing on one in the early 80's as a freshman. There still may be some of those early ones around. Ours is pretty nice and is very...I guess I will say "stiff". We get a lot of questins about it and quite a few compliments on how nice the floor and our facility is in general. I don't think many people expect to find what we have at a little country church out in the sticks.

Berea had one like this for a long time, but has been replaced for at least 20 years. I think they were fashionable in the 1970s but have since gone away.

We used to have one like this when I went to Madison Central back a long time ago. I'm not sure what they have now...I know the gym and campus has changed around significantly.

Yes. I played on that surface about late 60s or very early 70s. I seem to think it was kind of new at the time. You could stop on a dime but you didn't want to dive for balls. I remember an old floor(wood) at Bellevue that had a few dead spots in it that created havoc with your dribble. Man, I'm old.

Or it could have been Dayton with the dead spots, hell I can't remember any more.

I think the Bourbon County floor is the old tartan floor from the 1970's.

We used to play tournament games on the tartan floor at the University of Dayton Arena.

I always liked the surface, but UD does not have it anymore nor do many other places. Must be issues with it.

NC State used that type of floor for many years.

Tennessee was one of the first to have a synthetic floor....don't know if it was tartan.

Phelps had a floor that was like rubber, tough when diving for a loose ball let me tell you. Haven't stepped foot in that gym since the early 90's, I am sure it has been replaced by now. Got a little more spring off of the floor from what I remember.
