Will anyone else reach 1,000 coaching wins in Men's College Basketball?

Agreed. Donovan will never coach at UK.

I think now with people saying it will never happen, means that Donovan will end up being the next UK coach when Cal leaves lol. People were so sure he was coming, and now people seem so sure he won't. So he will end up being the next coach now. :D

Boeheim for sure.

I can see Huggins and Roy making it provided their health allows them to keep coaching.

Self has a great chance.

Just for perspective, I heard on the ESPN Radio today, that self would have to average 30 wins a year for the next 15 seasons to get to 1000, which means he's gotta coach until he's 67 years old minimum. Realistically, throw in a few down years, and he's probably going to need to coach into his 70's. I'm not so sure he has that great of a chance. Possible yes, but he's going to have to coach many more years, and have great teams almost every year.

They play a lot more games today then they used to. Going to see a few coaches get there.

For even more perspective, any coach has to average 33 wins a year for 33 years to reach 1000 career wins. That means you better get your first job in your 30's, and coach at a high level into your late 60's, early 70's. With the way college hoops has changed with players almost always leaving early, it's going to be tough to build the dynasty that will be required over many years for a coach to be able to get to 1000 wins. Not saying it won't happen, but it is going to be an exceedingly rare occurrence.

Coach K's 67 and still going strong.

Self, IMO, looks much younger than 52. Unless he develops health issues, or is tempted away by the NBA, I don't think it's a stretch to say he coaches another 15-20 years.

I don't disagree. Just saying, it's going to be tougher than it looks on the surface.

Geno Auriemma will get there on the women's side. 895 wins as of the time of this post.

Jim Boeheim easily will get there.

Several Women's coaches in striking range of 1000 also.

What's odd about Coach K is I thought he was done about 10 years ago. He started looking bad and he did not seem to be in good health. Then he found the Fountain of Youth and doesn't appear to have aged in about 5-6 years and going strong again. He went through a rough patch trying to find his mojo again with the changing climate of college basketball which he seems to have found. I am not sure if it has anything to do with coaching USA Basketball, but something with his perspective changed around that time.

If Coach Cal didn't come to UK I think he would have. But the stress of the job has definitely put him on track for younger retirement than most coaches. And if those wins weren't vacated I definitley could have seen him reach it.

He will be the all time leader unless he gets bored.

With more games being played and weak ooc schedules, there will be plenty of coaches reach that mark. Records are made to be broken.

It'll be tough, but I'd say it will happen.

There are more games in a season now, which helps, but almost every guy that is close now coached at a top notch school for a long time. The money and pressure of the modern college game is different now. Hard to picture someone staying 30 plus years at one place.

Shaka Smart maybe. If Richard is as good as Rick, maybe.

I don't think it will happen after Boehiem for a long time, if ever. Yes there are more games being played, but on the flip side the guys at the top of the sport are now making MASSIVE money ten and twenty fold and there is almost zero reason to hang around into their late 60s and 70s on the sideline. A guy like Shaka Smart will have over a hundred million in the bank long before he gets close to a thousand wins. Call it quits and move to a lucrative and much less stressful TV job long before pushing 70...

This is what I was thinking as well...these guys are making way too much money to keep themselves in the meat grinder for that long.
