Is Covington Catholic really that good a job?

Featured Replies

Not with the PH mafia there. No way a coach can come in and do it their way. Hated to see Wirth out there. He is a god coach and had done some good things. Maybe Lou Holtz will leave ESPN and come coach.

The whole "mafia" thing is overstated. Said differently, every school has a "mafia".

In fact, if you check the record books Cov Cath has had some of the longest tenured head coaches around. So I'd say overall the Cov Cath coaches are able to implement what they need done and stay satisfied.

Bob Rowe made this call- not some group of parents no matter what you think and how loud they might be.

1. There are a lot of benefits to a private education. Every teacher cares about every kid for starters. None of them are coasting into retirement.

There are tremendous advantages to a private education, no doubt, but teachers MUST consider retirement. And moreover, my point is more aimed at Cov. Cath trying to convince that proven coach who is 19 years vested in KTRS to come be theirs. That's where my point hits. It cuts such a large group of coaches out in my opinion. It cuts the field down tremendously IMO.

2. Nobody wants to beat the 3rd ,8th or 14th best team in the state for a championship. To be the best you need to play and beat the best. I enjoy the CCH Highlands series. Not the results the past 8 years, but I do enjoy the game. Mutual respect among the teams.

I think it's one of the best rivalry's in the state...but at the end of the day, you want the gold ball. How you got that sucker is forgotten in the rings, banners, and trophies. But I respect the Cov. Cath faithful for their desire to do it the tough way.

3. Facilities are a work in progress. Improvements are on the way.

It seems like this has been said for a long time. After awhile, you gotta come on and get them done.

4. Every team's expectations should be to win. That is why you keep score.

Fair, but you also have to give yourself a chance to win. Cov. Cath has proven it doesn't have the players to compete with its level of schedule year in and year out and stay healthy enough to make a real playoff push...yet the fans still clamor for this level of competition and then heads roll when what everyone knew would happen happens. Red flag.

5. Cov Cath parents historically are very supportive of the coaching staff for all sports and faculty as well. Just like at any other school (or business for that matter.) there are complainers that should be kept in perspective.

I agree...and admit ignorance. Just based this point on a perception built solely on what I have read here, not at all in facts.

If you want to win football games, it is a great job. You will always have a highly talented group of players.

If you want to win state championships, it is a very tough job.

Lights point is irrelevant IMO. Rest are fair.

Parents issue is a bit overblown.

You're right lights probably not as important in the long run. However, in the short term, a new coach combined with playing Friday night home games could be a boost to morale and excitement around the program.

99% of boys would rather play under the lights.

CCH needs to keep more players in the program beyond Frosh year. Sports diversity not helping the football Colonels over recent years.

The games being on Saturday have no impact on boys choosing not to play.

What kids under Wirth stopped playing after frosh year?

What will happen first, lights at Covington Catholic or a renovated Rupp arena? We have been hearing both are coming for years now.

Not to beat the lack of lights into the ground, what is the current status? Hell, CWB got me to pony up $20 last year to become a premium member to read about the lights at CCH.

I think there might be a decent chance that the lights will be coming a bit on the sooner side of things now than they would have otherwise.

CVH for 1.

Class of 14 - 6 or 7 starters on 2-loss (HHS) frosh team, Pope, Schreiver, Schult, etc.

Not necessarily an indictment on Wirth, just recognition of the CCH culture at present.

I'm not overly familiar with HHS personnel, but gotta believe more kids hang with football than CCH. Why wouldn't you, the success & community popularity is top notch.

Are you saying this because of the stories about boosters willing to pay for lights if they got rid of the head coach? I heard one coach had a really big booster dangling a big check over CovCath's head if they hired a particular coach.

The lights aren't a booster issue. The lights are a campus improvement capital campaign issue.

Reason #1 is hilarious!

overrated coaching job, parents try to run the show at CCH! :ohbrother:

I somewhat agree with you that the characterization of private school teacher vs public school teacher is gross. Having had two go through CCH and me graduating from a public school I can tell you there's not much difference. My sons had a few weak teachers. Every school has them. No school owns the top teachers.

I agree, as you know, I had one that went private and one that went public pretty much the same.

Here is my over generalization, parents and students at private schools seem to think that if a student does not go to private school they were not good enough to attend.
